The Sun Devil men’s basketball program welcomed former Buffalo assistant coach Ben Wood to Bobby Hurley's staff as Special Assistant to the Head Coach in April of 2015.
“Ben's energy and passion for the job will be a tremendous asset for Arizona State,” says Coach Hurley. “His background that includes being a part of a NCAA championship program is outstanding and he will play a big role in every part of the Sun Devil program.”
Wood was in charge of several operations in 2014-15 as Buffalo earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, including team travel and film exchange. He served in a similar capacity at Rhode Island prior to joining the Bulls, as he spent the 2012-13 season as the Rams’ director of player development, running the team’s video operations, coordinating film exchange and opponent breakdowns and edits.
The Woodbury, CT, native oversaw Rhode Island’s community relations program, the staff of team managers and served as the staff liaison with the academic services office.
Wood earned both bachelor’s (2007) and master’s (2009) in geography from UCONN where he served as the head manager for the men’s basketball team. He was part of the staff that won the 2011 National Championship. He served in numerous capacities at Connecticut - most recently as the Huskies’ head graduate manager, and was part of program advanced to two Final Fours and three Elite Eights.
During his time at UCONN, Wood was also a part of a program that won two Big East Championship teams (2006 and 2011). From 2007-11, he was the co-director of the Jim Calhoun Basketball Camp, which featured more than 1,200 youth aged 8-17 each year. Wood was responsible for hiring camp’s coaches, administrative and support staff and worked with University Residential and Meal Services department to make all housing and meal arrangements.
