Anthony Garnett

TitleAnalyst - Defense
Former college quarterback and coaching veteran Anthony Garnett enters his third season as a defensive analyst for Sun Devil Football.

"Anthony Garnett brings tremendous experience and knowledge to our program," ASU head coach Herm Edwards said when announcing Garnett’s hire in 2018. "He has a tireless work ethic, with a background in several different facets in the game of football."

Garnett joined the staff after serving as the special teams coordinator and the strength & conditioning coach at De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. He was responsible for all special teams calls on gameday for the Dons, helping the team double its win total in his first season on staff.

Garnett played his collegiate ball at Cal Poly, earning a full scholarship after transferring from junior college. During his time as a Mustang, Garnett led the school to its highest national ranking since transitioning to the Division I-AA (FCS) level. He served as the Mustangs team captain and led the 2005 team to its first DI-AA playoff berth. Cal Poly also captured the 2004 Great West conference title in Garnett's second season in San Luis Obispo.

Garnett compiled accolades at Cal Poly that include a First-Team All Great West selection in 2005. Garnett finished top-10 in the nation in passing efficiency (158.1), totaling 21 passing TDs while adding 12 rushing TDs in 13 games leading the Mustangs to a 10-3 record in 2005. Garnett graduated from Cal Poly in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology.

"Words cannot express the amount of gratitude I have for the opportunity Coach Edwards has given me" Garnett said. "Sun Devil Football has countless elite staff members and I am fired up to learn from each individual and contribute in any way to help us win."

Garnett has made several stops during his coaching career, including the 2016-17 season serving as the assistant head coach with offensive coordinator duties as well as the defensive backs coach for the Seaside High School Varsity Football Program. In his only season coaching, Garnett led the Spartans to an undefeated season and a Monterey Bay League Title and sectional semifinals appearance as a number two seed in California Interscholastic Federation Central Coast Section Playoffs.

Garnett has extensive experience at the junior college level, with connections to several prominent CCCAA schools. From 2014-16, he served as the tight ends and wide receivers coach at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, Calif. He was responsible for developing the weekly schematic framework of passing plays as the passing game coordinator and assisted in the offensive coordinator's game planning. While coaching at MPC, Garnett earned his Master of Science in Recreation and Sport Pedagogy Concentration in Coaching Education from Ohio University at the Patton College of Education Earned in 2015.

Before entering the junior college coaching ranks, Garnett was the quarterbacks coach at Missouri University S&T at the NCAA Division II level. While a member of the Knights coaching staff from 2010-12, he assisted the offensive coordinator with weekly game planning by creating detailed scouting reports on opposing defenses. The offense scored 14 more touchdowns in his second year compared to his first year on campus.
