Clayton Kirven joined the ASU staff in March of 2020. In his role Kirven assists ASU Head Sports Performance Coach Joe Connolly with all facets of the football team’s Sports Performance program.
Kirven came to ASU from UMass where he served as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the UMass Men’s Ice Hockey Team for three years (2017-2020). In 2019, Kirven helped the UMass Ice Hockey program make their first Frozen Four appearance, where they finished National Runner Up to Minnesota Duluth.
Kirven oversaw the strength and conditioning development of NHL Draft picks Cale Makar (COL), Mario Ferraro (SJS), John Leonard (SJS), Marc Del Gaizo (NSH), Filip Lindberg (MIN), Zac Jones (NYR), and Matt Kessel (STL). In addition to his duties with the hockey team, Kirven also supervised the strength and conditioning programs for baseball and women’s tennis, while also assisting with football.
Kirven arrived at the University of Massachusetts in August of 2016 as a Professional Strength and Conditioning Intern. During his first year with the athletic department, Kirven worked primarily with the football and women’s basketball programs.
Previously, Kirven was an intern at the University of Denver, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Wyoming.
Kirven holds a Master’s of Science in Health and Human Development from Montana State University, graduating in 2015. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion from the University of Wyoming in 2011.
Kirven was a four-year letter winner on the Football Team, earning second-team All-Mountain West in 2011. Kirven is Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCCa) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
