Finally got our kachina for beating that team down south last season ??#NoPity pic.twitter.com/nrZZ3gEtWi

— Sun Devil Volleyball (@SunDevilVB) August 25, 2021

Arizona State University and University of Arizona sports teams competed against one another in 19 common varsity intercollegiate sports during the 2020-21 academic year. For a school to be the winner of the Territorial Cup Series ® Trophy, it must accumulate 10 points, and Arizona won the trophy with 10 points.

  • Each sport will be worth one (1) point.
  • The point is awarded to the team that wins a season series.
    1. If the teams play once in a given season (football) then that game counts as one point.
    2. For baseball and softball, all regular season games count towards season series tally, including the non-conference games.
    3. For cross country, golf, and track and field only, one point is awarded to whichever team finishes higher in the Pac-12 Championship.
  • If teams split the regular season match-ups, then each team receives a half-point for that sport.
  • In the event of a tie the following tie-breaker will be used: University with higher finish in the Directors' Cup Standings.
    1. In the event of a tie after the Directors' Cup Standings are used the TCS will end in a tie.
As the 2020-21 season progresses, below will be a running recap of competitions from this season in which a Territorial Cup Point is on the line.

UA MEN’S GOLF WINS POINT (UA CLINCHES SERIES 10.0-7.0)
APRIL 28, 2021:  UA WINS PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP, ASU SECOND: The Sun Devil men's golf team played well enough to win a lot of tournaments this week, but not quite well enough to win the Pac-12 title. The Sun Devils couldn't overcome leader Arizona and finished second at Mayacama Golf Club (par 72/6,785 yards) in Santa Rosa, CA. ASU finished at 37-under 1,403 (346-349-360-348) while Arizona won the crown at 41-under 1,399 (344-352-355-348).  ASU (-25) was four shots behind Arizona (-29) entering the final round and took a lead midway through the final round, but Arizona played great down the stretch to win the title. ASU's second-place finish is its best since it won the title in 2008. Arizona grabbed the third-round lead with a 5-under 355 (teams played six and counted five as per Pac-12 tradition) while ASU had sophomore Ryggs Johnston tied for the individual lead at 12-under 204 (67-66-71) and senior Chun An Yu three shots back at 9-under 207 (69-69-69). Both Johnston and Yu tied for fourth at 4-under 276, with Yu shooting 69 every day and Johnston finishing with a 72.

ASU WOMEN'S GOLF WINS POINT (UA LEADS 9.0-7.0)
APRIL 25, 2021: ASU 3RD AND UA 4TH AT PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP: ASU (+8/860) secured a third-place finish for the second consecutive championship and third time in five tries under head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. With Territorial Cup Series implications making every stroke important, the Sun Devils finished ahead of Arizona to claim the point. It is the first time since 2016 the Maroon & Gold claimed the point, a crucial one in preventing the Wildcats from clinching the series. It was a clutch finish by Linn Grant that was the key for ASU, as she birdied 16 and 17 down the stretch to put her team up one stroke in the standings. Three Sun Devils birdied 16, showing poise when they needed to the most. The Sun Devils finished behind champion USC and host Stanford, with six of the ten teams finishing +23 or worse.

UA BEACH VOLLEYBALL WINS ANOTHER HALF POINT (UA LEADS 9.0-6.0)

APRIL 22, 2021: UA 4, ASU 1 AT XAVIER COLLEGE PREPATORY: No. 20 Arizona State fell in the second Territorial Cup dual against No. 9 Arizona, 4-1, at Xavier College Preparatory on on April 22. Arizona State finished the regular season 9-10 (4-7 Pac-12), while Arizona (21-4, 5-2 Pac-12) earned the full Territorial Cup point in the series after winning the dual in Tucson earlier this season. This was also the last regular season dual for ASU before the Pac-12 Championships. The lone point for the Sand Devils came on court three. Senior Cierra Flood and sophomore Sarah Waters dropped the first set but came storming back to take the second and third sets and win the match. It was the 50th career win for Flood, making her the seventh Sand Devil to reach that mark. This is the third win for this pair over a duo from a ranked team this season.

SUN DEVIL SOFTBALL EARNS FULL POINT (UA LEADS 8.5-6.0)

APR 16-18, 2021 -- @ASU 3 GAMES, ASU 1: A new COVID induced scheduling format for 2021 -- four games in three days with one non-conference game on Saturday night -- turned into a Pac-12 sweep for the Sun Devils as the Wildcats could only get the non-conference win. ASU won the Friday night contest 4-3 and then clinched the Pac-12 series with a solid 8-1 win in the Saturday matinee. Arizona won the Saturday night non-conference game, but ASU earned the eight-inning 4-3 win and Pac-12 sweep behind Denae Chatman's two-homer effort and Maddi Hackbarth's game-winning hit. The Sun Devil Pac-12 sweep of the in-state rival is their first since 2012, the first series win versus the Wildcats in the Trisha Ford era and the team's first sweep of a Pac-12 opponent in 2021.

FOOTBALL (SUN DEVILS GET FIRST FULL POINT IN THE SERIES, ASU LEADS 1.0-0.5)
DEC. 11, 2020 -- ASU 70, AT ARIZONA 7:
History was made on a cool Friday evening as the Sun Devils rewrote numerous sections of the record book with its 70-7 dismantling at Arizona in the annual Territorial Cup contest. How quickly did it get going in the favor of the Sun Devils? ASU had two touchdowns in the first minute. Since 1996 that has only happened twice: North Texas vs. UTEP (Nov. 2, 2019) and Western Michigan vs. Ball State (Oct. 9, 2010). The Sun Devils recorded a school record 10 touchdowns for the second-most points in program history and most in the Pac-12 era, surpassing the 61 set in 1951. The victory gave ASU four in a row over the Wildcats - the first four-game winning streak for ASU in the Pac-12 era. Rachaad White earned the Bob Moran Territorial Cup Most Valuable Player award behind his 133-yard, three-touchdown effort that was highlighted by a 93-yard touchdown run (tied for the fifth-longest touchdown rush in program history).

We just received the uniform of @ASUFootball’s Peizhang "Jackson" He; the 1st Chinese-born player to score a touchdown in FBS history! He came to Arizona state after moving thousands of miles from his hometown of Shaoguan, China. #GoDevils pic.twitter.com/2VsO5HorDK

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (ARIZONA GETS ON SCOREBOARD FIRST AND LEADS WITH A HALF POINT)
DEC. 10, 2020 --AT ARIZONA 65, ASU 37: A 27 percent shooting effort and 23 turnovers proved to be too much for the Sun Devils to overcome against the nation's sixth-ranked team as ASU fell 65-37 at Arizona. Taya Hanson tied her career high with 14 points to lead the Sun Devils, who were facing their second-straight Top-10 foe, after falling to then-No. 9 UCLA 63-59 on Sunday. Unlike Sunday's game in which the Sun Devils (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) fought back from a 17-point deficit to eventually take the lead in the final frame against the Bruins, ASU found itself unable to put together any substantial scoring runs once the Wildcats went up by double digits in the second quarter.
