The Arizona State University Women’s Golf Team swept all honors in 1994-95. History was made when the team won the 1995 NCAA Championships, winning three in a row (1993, 1994, 1995) and going undefeated. No other golf team has accomplished this in the history of the sport.
Members of the championship lineup in Wilmington, N.C., were Kellee Booth, Heather Bowie, Linda Ericsson, Kristel Mourgue d’Algue and Wendy Ward with head coach Linda Vollstedt and assistant coach Ashley Adleta leading the way for the undefeated season. Vinny Riviello was a big part of the regular season lineup.
HIGHLIGHTS…
--The team won each event by an average of 25 shots. It had just one tie, as San Jose State and ASU tied at 878 in Tucson.
--Besides winning the team titles, ASU had the individual winner in nine out of 10 tournaments.
--At the Pac-10 Conference Championships, ASU won the team title, the individual title (Wendy Ward), and placed all five players on the All-Pac-10 Team. Wendy Ward was named the Conference Player of the Year. ASU won the team title by 33 strokes.
AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS…
--ASU won the event by 26 shots over San Jose State and by 29 shots over Wake Forest.
--Kristel Mourgue d’Algue was the individual winner and Wendy Ward tied for runner-up honors.
--Wendy Ward, Kristel Mourgue d’Algue, Heather Bowie, and Kellee Booth were all named as First-Team All Americans (the first time four teammates have been named to the First Team) and Linda Ericsson was named to the Honorable Mention Team.
END OF YEAR HONORS…
--Heather Bowie received the Edith Munson Award (this award combines athletics and academics)
--Wendy Ward won the Eleanor Dudley Player of the Year Award for the second time, was named as the Golfweek Player of the Year, and was a Honda Award Winner for Golf for the second year.
--Coach Vollstedt was named the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year, NGCA Regional Coach of the Year, NGCA Co-Coach of the Year, and Golfweek Coach of the Year.
