A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Whiting also earned Academic All-America for the third year in a row as he maintained a 3.42 grade-point average in civil engineering throughout a career that saw him capture six individual national titles.

SUN DEVIL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT QUICK NOTES
*Sun Devil teams have won 135 national titles, including 22 NCAA championships, with NCAA titles under current coaches Greg Kraft (women's indoor and outdoor track and field in 2007 and men's and women's indoor titles in 2008), Randy Lein (men's golf in 1996), Clint Myers (softball in 2008) and Melissa McNamara (women's golf in 2009).
*ASU has finished in the top 15 of the Directors' Cup 12 of the past 14 years and finished a school-best fourth in 2007-08, a mark that was highlighted by Sports Illustrated naming it the top "Athletic Department in the Nation" for the 2007-08 school year.
*The Sun Devil baseball program is closing in on having its 100th former player reach the major leagues, a list that includes current standouts Dustin Pedroia, Andre Ethier, Ike Davis and Mike Leake. ASU has made 22 appearances at the College World Series (third all-time) and has five NCAA titles (fourth-best). The Sun Devil women's golf program has won seven NCAA titles, the most in NCAA history.
*Nearly 150 Sun Devil athletes and coaches have competed at the Olympic games representing 35 nations and 18 Sun Devils have won 23 gold medals, the most recent being long jumper Dwight Phillips in 2004.
BASEBALL (TIM ESMAY/FIRST SEASON/HIRED DEC. 3, 2009)
Won the Pacific-10 Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive season and made a second straight trip to the College World Series, the 22nd all-time for ASU...finished the year 52-10, 20-7 in Pac-10 play and notched back-to-back College World Series trips since 1993-1994...swept the Tempe Regional, beating Milwaukee and Hawai'i twice, then swept Arkansas in the Tempe Super Regional, winning both games in 12 innings...lost to Clemson in the first game of the College World Series, then was eliminated by eventual national champion South Carolina...finished the season ranked as high as fourth, the sixth time in the last eight years that ASU has finished the season ranked in the top-10...went 36-3 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark, giving them a 146-15 mark at home over the past four seasons...2010 marked the 48th straight season Arizona State topped the 30-win plateau, the 31st time in school history with over 40 wins and the 18th time with more than 50 wins...2010 marks the first time since 1981-82 that ASU has won 50+ games in back-to-back seasons (51 in 2009)...advanced to its 11th straight NCAA Tournament and made its 22nd appearance in the College World Series, tops in the Pac-10. It was the fourth trip to Omaha since 2005...Head Coach Tim Esmay became the 22nd coach in history to lead a program to the College World Series in his first year with the school and the second in ASU history (Jim Brock, 1972)...Esmay has now participated in the College World Series as a player (1987), assistant coach (1988, 1994, 2005, 2007, 2009) and a head coach (2010)...The Sun Devils began the season on a 24-game winning streak, the longest win streak to open a season in ASU history. It was the second longest win streak in school history. The 24 straight victories to open the season also gave Tim Esmay the best start to a coaching career in ASU history...ASU won the first 22 home games this season, giving the Devils 28 straight home wins dating back to 2009, tied for the fourth longest home winning streak in school history...faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation, facing 11 teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, two that advanced to Super Regionals and one (UCLA) that advanced to the College World Series...ASU faced the ninth toughest schedule in the country according to BoydsWorld.com and finished the season with the #1 ISR and RPI in the country...faced 14 teams that were ranked at one point during the 2010 season...the first school in Pac-10 history to win Pac-10 Player of the Year in four straight seasons, as Zack MacPhee took home the 2010 award. ASU also became the first school in conference history to win the Pitcher of the Year award three consecutive seasons, as Seth Blair was the 2010 winner. Tim Esmay was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year, the fourth straight year a Sun Devil has been honored with the award...Sun Devils led the Pac-10 in 12 major offensive categories: batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs batted in, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks and stolen bases. They also led the Pac-10 in saves and fielding percentage...Riccio Torrez led the Pac-10 with his .393 batting average, his .489 on base percentage, his 92 hits, 27 doubles and 25 HBPs. Zack MacPhee led the conference in runs scored (67) and triples (14). His 14 triples set a new school record. Kole Calhoun led the Pac-10 in walks (64) and Drew Maggi led the Pac-10 in stolen bases (36). Brady Rodgers was the league's ERA champ (2.11), while Mitchell Lambson led in opposing batting average (.160). Seth Blair tied for the conference lead in wins with 12, while Jordan Swagerty led the conference in saves with 14. Swagerty's 14 saves established a new school record. Lambson tied a school record with his 39 appearances, which tied for tops in the Pac-10...Zack MacPhee was a Unanimous First Team All-American, earning the honors from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Rivals.com, the ABCA and the NCBWA. He was also named the District IX Player of the Year by the NCBWA. Seth Blair was named a First Team All-American by Baseball America, the ABCA and Rivals.com and a Second Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. Jordan Swagerty earned Second Team All-American honors from the NCBWA and Third Team honors by Collegiate Baseball and the ABCA, while Riccio Torrez was named a Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball...Brady Rodgers was named a First Team Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, while Deven Marrero earned First Team honors from Collegiate Baseball and Second Team honors from the NCBWA...15 Sun Devils earned All-Pac10 honors, including a conference leading seven First Team members. Zack MacPhee, Seth Blair, Drew Maggi, Riccio Torrez, Kole Calhoun, Jordan Swagerty and Mitchell Lambson were all named to the First Team, with Raoul Torrez, Zach Wilson, Austin Barnes, Jake Borup, Merrill Kelly, Johnny Ruettiger, Deven Marrero and Brady Rodgers all earning honorable mentions...Three Devils were named to the Academic All-Pac-10 team, led by First Team choice Riccio Torrez. Seth Blair and Matt Newman each earned Second Team honors...Kole Calhoun was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tempe Regional...10 Sun Devils were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, led by Seth Blair, who was a First Round (Compensation A) pick of the St. Louis Cardinals...Four Sun Devil legends were named to the College World Series Legends Team: Eddie Bane, Bob Horner, Barry Bonds and Sal Bando...Arizona State averaged 3,506 fans per game at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark during the 2010 season, the highest average attendance in at least the past 20 years...Arizona State led the nation in triples (37) and finished second in winning percentage (.839).

Finished 22-11 overall and 12-6 in the Pac-10, good for second place, its highest finish in the Pac-10 since 1980-81...Herb Sendek became just the second Sun Devil to earn Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors in ASU's 32 years of Pac-10 play (Ned Wulk in 1979-80)...Sun Devils are the only team in the Pac-10 to post 20 wins in each of the past three seasons...ASU has three 20-win seasons under Herb Sendek in four years after having three 20 win-seasons in the previous 25 seasons...past season was the first since time 1994-95 (past 15 seasons) that ASU did not have a three-game losing streak... ASU is 32-22 (.593) in Pac-10 regular season games the past three seasons, tied for the second-best mark with Washington...ASU allowed just 58.7 points per game, the eighth-best mark in the nation...after going 8-22 in Coach Sendek's first year (2006-2007), ASU is 68-34 (.667) and giving up just 60.7 ppg. in his 131 games...with its Feb. 25 win at Stanford, ASU clinched its third straight 20-win season for the first time since 1961-63...Derek Glasser set ASU records for games played (131), assists (551) and free throw percentage (.838) and is the first Sun Devil with 1,000 points (1,028) and 500 assists (551)...ASU made its 11th appearances in the NIT...Eric Boateng led the Pac-10 in field goal percentage at .665 (117-of-176) and finished even better in Pac-10 play at 68-of-103 (.660) and matched Pac-10 record by making all 11 field goal attempts at Stanford on Feb. 25... junior Ty Abbott earned first-team All-Pac-10 as in the 18 league games, he finished ninth in the loop in scoring (14.7 points per game), 11th in rebounding (5.7 rpg.), ninth in free throw percentage (.818 as he was 36-of-44), fourth in three-point percentage (.411 as he was 53-of-129), second in three-pointers made per game (2.9) and sixth in defensive rebounds per game (5.0)...Coach Sendek's four years at the helm of the program already is third-longest among current Pac-10 coaches...for the second time in four seasons, Herb Sendek earned United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District IX honors (California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Arizona and Alaska) as he was the only coach of the nine honored to not have a player on his All-District team...seven of ASU's 23 opponents had season-lows in points against ASU...ASU became just the third Pac-10 team to win three straight in McKale Center in the past 27 seasons (1983-84 to present) when it beat Arizona 73-69 in Tucson on Feb. 21. Stanford under Mike Montgomery won four straight from 2001-2004 and UCLA under Ben Howland won three straight from 2006-08...Trent Lockett earned a spot on the five-man Pac-10 All-Freshman Team...in overall statistics, ASU led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.2), fewest turnovers per game (11.9) and three-pointers made per game (8.2)...In the 18 Pac-10 regular season games only, ASU led the league in three-pointers made (7.9) and fewest turnovers per game (11.4)...this year's 58.7 points per game allowed was the lowest by ASU since the 1948-49 team gave up 47.6... ASU at 10-8 is the only team in the Pac-10 with a winning league road record in each of the past two seasons, as it has gone 5-4 each year away from Tempe...ASU won five Pac-10 road games for just the sixth time in its 32-year history this year. It went 8-1 in 1980-81, 7-2 in 1979-80 and 5-4 in 2009-10, 2008-09, 1994-95 and 1982-83.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (CHARLI TURNER THORNE/14th SEASON/HIRED JULY 1, 1996)
Finished 18-14 and 9-9 in the Pac-10 (fifth)... Made its 11th consecutive postseason appearance after qualifying for the WNIT where it advanced to the second round... The Sun Devils began their current postseason streak with their first WNIT appearance in 2000. ASU then made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2001-02) followed by back-to-back appearances in the WNIT (2003-04) before beginning a streak of five consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, the longest such streak in school history...Despite finishing in fifth place in the Pac-10 this season, ASU has still won 76 percent (68-22) of its Pac-10 contests since the 2005-06 season... ASU's 131 blocks in 2009-10 were the second-highest number in school history. The Sun Devils were four blocks short of breaking the single-season record for the fourth consecutive season... Senior Danielle Orsillo led the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game and now is the third leading scorer in Sun Devil history with 1,383 points...team was affected by the loss of senior Dymond Simon, who missed the entire season due to a knee injury suffered in the 2009 regular season finale against Stanford in 2009.

The Sun Devils advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since the 2008 season and placed 19th overall with 472 points... the team also placed third in the Pac-10 Championships (88 points) before tying for fifth place in the NCAA West Region Championships (155 points)... Brandon Bethke was the top finisher for the Sun Devils in all five races he ran, including the NCAA meet, where he was seventh overall to earn All-America honors... his finish ranks as the highest by an ASU man at the national meet and the second-highest all-time in program history behind only Lisa Aguilera's fourth-place finish in 2000... Bethke also took seventh at the NCAA West Region meet and was the runner-up at the Pac-10 meet... Bethke was selected All-Pac-10 First Team and USTFCCCA All-West Region for his efforts... Ben Engelhardt joined him on the all-conference team as a second-team selection... the team won the ASU Invitational at the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival and produced four other third-place showings as well... academically, Bethke was selected as the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, presented by Toyo Tires for men's cross country... he was one of seven men to also earn Academic All-Pac-10 honors, which featured three first-team honorees in Engelhardt, Ben Jankunas and Cameron Liston.

The Sun Devils advanced to their 12th-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, placing 24th overall with 520 points... that appearance streak is the eighth-longest in NCAA history and the third-longest active streak... team placed third in the Pac-10 Championships (110 points) and fourth in the NCAA West Region (119 points)... at the national meet, the Sun Devils were led by Allie Kieffer, who placed 49th overall and was nine places from earning All-America honors... Kari Hardt led the charge for the team at the conference and regional meets, placing seventh and 16th overall, respectively... for her finishes, she was selected Second Team All-Pac-10 and also to the USTFCCCA All-West Region team... Hardt was joined on the region team by Anna Sperry, Lindsay Prescott and Kieffer as all four finished in the Top 25... Sperry, in her first race for the team after transferring into the program, won the Dave Murray Invitational... the women's `B' team won the ASU Invitational at the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival and posted five other Top 4 finishes on the season... the team earned academic recognition from the USTFCCCA while 12 individuals were honored by the Pac-10 for their academic success, including Chelsea Caloia, who earned first-team honors.

Finished 9-7-3 overall and 2-6-1 (eighth) in the Pac-10 under head coach Kevin Boyd, who led the team to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2003 (fourth overall appearance in 14-year history of the program)...Sun Devils lost in the first round of NCAAs at Wisconsin - official score was 1-1, however Wisconsin won penalty kick shootout...team began the season with a 7-1-2 record. The seven wins tied the second-highest number of wins after 10 games in program history...made first appearance in the NSCAA Top 25 since the 2004 preseason when it was ranked No. 19 in the Sept. 19 poll...team was dealt a serious blow when senior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri, the school's all-time leader in GAA was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury against Northern Arizona (Sept. 27). As a result the Sun Devils would begin Pac-10 play with true freshman Allysa Gillmore...began Pac-10 season 0-6-1. Five of the six losses were by one goal and three were in overtime...closed out regular season by winning final two Pac-10 games defeating Oregon State (1-0 OT) and Oregon (2-0) at home...Silvestri closed out her Sun Devi career as the school's all-time leader in GAA (0.78) and posted the three highest single-season GAAs in school history - 0.67 in 2009, 0.77 in 2008 and 0.85 in 2007...ASU had 11 played named to the Pac-10's All-Academic Team, which tied for most in the Pac-10. In addition, ASU's three first-team honorees were the most of any team in the conference while its combined six first- and second-team honorees were also the most in the conference. ASU's nine first-team honorees over the last three years are the most of any school in the Pac-10 during that span.

Finished with a 44-17 record and a 10-11 mark in the Pac-10 (fourth place) and reached the NCAA Super Regionals for the fifth consecutive season, a program record while going 3-2 in the NCAA Tournament...Katelyn Boyd took home first-team All-America honors...team also collected nine all Pac-10 Team selections as well as a school record and Pac-10 leading 11 selections to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team...sophomore pitcher Hillary Bach posted a 25-8 record on the year with a 2.37 ERA...her 25 wins is good for seventh on the ASU single-season list as well as moving to ninth in the ASU career records with 56 wins...sophomore shortstop Katelyn Boyd also posted an amazing season en route to her first career All-America award...while leading the nation in nearly every offensive category at one point, Boyd also climbed up the ASU record books as well...at the end of the season in ASU single-season records Boyd found herself ranked in: batting average (.415 - ninth), home runs (15 - seventh), RBIs (48 - 12th), hits (73 - 11th), doubles (12 - 17th) and stolen bases (27 - fifth)...Boyd also inched up in the ASU career records as well, finishing ranked in home runs (25 - ninth), RBIs (102 - 11th), doubles (29 - eighth) and stolen bases (35 - tenth)...junior outfielder Lesley Rogers also compiled an amazing season with a .389 batting average, placing her 15th in ASU single-season records, with her 72 hits placing her 11th all-time and 13 doubles and 23 stolen bases placing her 12th and tenth all-time in single-season records...the junior also pushed up the career charts now holding the following records: batting average (.341 - ninth), hits (175 - 16th), doubles (29 - eighth) and stolen bases (31 - 12th)...as a team ASU led the nation in scoring for several weeks and finished the season ranked in several NCAA categories, including: double plays per game (.490 - second), batting average (.323 - ninth), scoring (6.34 - 12th), slugging percentage (.517 - 16th), WL Percentage (.788 - 17th), home runs per game (1.18 - 17th), and fielding percentage (.971 - 27th)...a former Sun Devil was also named to the USA Softball team, with Kaiitlin Cochran set to represent ASU on a national stage.

INDOOR: Finished seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships with 21.0 points after placing fourth at the MPSF Indoor Championships with 75.0 points... the team's finish at the national meet marked it's fourth-consecutive Top 10 national finish (indoor and outdoor NCAA meets)... Ryan Whiting completed a three-peat in the shot put as he captured the event at the NCAA meet for the third year in a row with a winning toss of 21.52m (70-07.25) to lead the way for ASU at the meet... Jason Lewis was once again a two-time All-American as he placed sixth in the weight throw (21.15m/69-04.75) and seventh in the shot put (18.64m/61-02.00)... Brandon Bethke was the only other individual All-American as he raced to a fourth-place finish in the 3,000m run (8:11.61)... the team of Justin Kremer, Ray Miller, Donald Sanford and Joel Phillip earned All-America honors in the 4x400m relay by finishing eighth in 3:08.51... the men won four titles at the MPSF Championships, including Lawrence Trice in the 60m dash (6.68), Sanford in the 400m dash (46.19) and Mason McHenry, for the second year in a row, in the 800m run (1:48.89)... the 4x400m relay of Sanford, Phillip, Kremer and Allante Battle won the title in 3:07.38, the eighth-best time in school history... Whiting and Lewis both competed at the USA Indoor Championships instead of the MPSF event... Whiting took second in the shot put (21.03m/69-00.00) and earned a place on Team USA for the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, but did not compete in the international meet as it was the same weekend as the NCAA Indoor Championships... Lewis finished 10th in the shot put (17.43m/57-02.25) at the USA meet... 23 marks recorded during the season rank among the all-time Top 10 in ASU history with one being a school record... the team of Nectaly Barbosa, Sanford, McHenry and Bethke combined to set the school mark in the distance medley relay as they ran 9:31.34... following the indoor season, David Dumble was selected as the USTFCCCA Men's Division National Assistant Coach of the Year after being named the West region recipient... it was his first honor on the men's side after receiving four other awards after working with the women in 2006-08... outside of competition, Whiting and Lewis both earned NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships to continue their educations after the outdoor season... 13 men were selected MPSF All-Academic.
OUTDOOR: Finished fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 37.0 points to capture the team's first outdoor trophy finish (Top 4) since 1981 and earned the team's fifth-consecutive national Top 10 finish... scored 85 points to tie with UCLA for fourth place at the Pac-10 Conference Championships... Ryan Whiting capped a remarkable career by sweeping the national titles in the shot put and discus, marking just the 11th time in NCAA history (since 1926) that one man won both events in the same meet... Whiting won the discus with a toss of 59.06m (193-06) before capturing his fifth career shot put crown with a toss of 21.97m (72-01.00)... his winning shot put mark ranks as the second-best all-time in NCAA history and was just 3cm shy of tying the collegiate record... Whiting also swept both events at the Pac-10 Championships, marking the only two meets he won the discus... he capped his career with 10 meets in which he recorded a toss of 70-feet or better, which included eight in 2010 (indoor and outdoor), both of which are all-time college records... Whiting also was selected as the Pac-10 Co-Field Athlete of the Year, the 2010 Pac-10 Tom Hansen Conference Medal of Honor recipient and as one of 10 finalists for the Bowerman Award (collegiate track & field/cross country athlete of the year)... he also was selected as the 2010 Track & Field News Male Athlete of the Year... at the Pac-10 meet, the men swept the Top 3 places in the shot put with Whiting winning his second Pac-10 title while Clarke was runner-up and Lewis third... along with Whiting's school-record toss of 21.97m in the shot put and Sanford's run of 45.21 in the 400m dash, five other marks recorded by men's athletes found a place on the ASU all-time Top 10, including Clarke in three throwing events... Clarke's toss of 19.21m at the NCAA Championships ranks eighth all-time at ASU while his season best marks of 60.81m (199-06) in the hammer and 56.41m (185-01) in the discus rank as the sixth and 10th-best marks all-time... in the men's 10,000m run, Jeff Helmer improved to 29:42.58 to move up to fifth on the all-time list while Alonso Contreras ran the seventh-best time in 30:19.73... academically, Whiting and Lewis were both selected as ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-Americans (the first in men's program history) and were two of 17 men that were selected Academic All-Pac-10.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD (GREG KRAFT/14th SEASON/ July 28, 1996)
INDOOR: The team did not score at the NCAA Indoor Championships and finished fourth at the MPSF Indoor Championships with 79.0 points scored... two true freshman qualified automatically for the NCAA Championships with both Constance Ezugha and Christabel Nettey reaching the national meet... neither woman placed in the Top 8, but Ezugha did earn All-America honors as the eighth-highest finishing American in the event... at the MPSF Championships, the women won a trio of events to aid them in their fourth-place finish... Jasmine Chaney led the way by winning the 400m dash (53.83) before anchoring the 4x400m relay to victory in 3:38.40... Chaney was joined on the relay by Dominique' Maloy, Keia Pinnick and Kayla Sanchez... Ezugha was the other champion for ASU as she captured the long jump title with a leap of 6.45m (21-02.00), which ranks as the third-best all-time in program history... overall, 25 marks recorded on the year ranked among the Top 10 all-time in ASU history, including four in the 60m hurdles, three in the 3,000m run and two each in the long jump, pole vault, weight throw and heptathlon... in the hurdles Chaney (8.33), Christabel Nettey (8.46), Samantha Henderson (8.95) and Pinnick (8.98) recorded the fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth-best times in program history while the trio of Kari Hardt (9:28.78), Anna Sperry (9:28.84) and Allie Kieffer (9:31.91) posted the sixth, seventh and eighth-best times in the 3,000m run... of the 25 Top 10 marks recorded during the indoor season, seven came from true freshman with another six coming from newcomers to the program (transfers)... academically, eight women were selected Academic All-MPSF.
OUTDOOR: Finished tied for 46th place with 4.0 points scored at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after taking third at the Pac-10 Conference Championships with 89.5 points... Jasmine Chaney led the way for the women as she finished fifth in the finals of the 400m hurdles (57.83) to score four points for the team and claim All-America honors at the NCAA meet... Chaney also competed in the 100m hurdles, making her one of four women nationally to qualify in both hurdle events... she joined rookie Keia Pinnick in the 400m hurdles with the two women making ASU one of four teams to qualify two women to the long hurdle event... at the conference meet, Chaney led the way with three individual third-place finishes and two Top 3 placements in the relays while Cj Navarro was the lone champion for the Sun Devils as she won the discus (51.06m/167-06)... Navarro also was third in the hammer (53.75m/176-04) to score 16 points for the team... Chaney finished third in the 100m dash (11.74), third in the 100m hurdles (13.46) and third in the 200m dash (23.72) while helping the 4x400m relay team of Dominique' Maloy, Pinnick and Kayla Sanchez to runner-up honors (3:36.31) and the 4x100m relay of Sanchez, Christabel Nettey and Maloy to third place (44.76)... 12 individuals scored at the Pac-10 Championships with eight Top 3 finishes recorded... Pinnick was third in the heptathlon with a personal-best and ASU fourth-best score of 5,219 points and was fourth in the 400m hurdles in 58.86... senior Ali Kielty scored in the two long distance races, taking seventh in the 10,000m run (34:05.72) and eighth in the 5,000m run (16:27.52)... the team finished one-half of one-point ahead of USC for third place overall, picking up that fraction of a point with Samantha Henderson's tie for eighth place in the high jump... 16 different marks were recorded during the year that rank among the Top 10 all-time in ASU history with one record... the record came in the final event of the Pac-10 heptathlon, the 800m run, where Pinnick ran 2:13.99 to set the ASU heptathlon event record... Pinnick joined Chaney on the Top 10 list in the 400m hurdles, marking one of five events in which two women added their marks... in the 400m hurdles, Chaney rank 57.67 and Pinnick 58.03 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round to advance to the NCAA Championships with the fifth and sixth-best times, respectively, in ASU history... the other events in which two athletes posted Top 10 marks were the 100m hurdles (Chaney is fifth at 13.26 and Nettey 10th at 13.62); the 3,000m steeplechase (Cherise McNair is seventh at 10:26.40 and Kauren Tarver is eighth at 10:26.61); the hammer throw (Navarro is seventh at 53.75m/176-4 and Ashley Lampley is 10th at 51.23m/168-1); and the heptathlon (Pinnick is fourth at 5,219 points and Samantha Henderson is sixth at 5,126 points)... academically, Navarro and Angela Spadafino both were selected ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII First Team honorees while Maloy was selected to the second team... 13 women earned Academic All-Pac-10 honors, including five that were selected to the first team.

Finished 2009 season with a 13-17 record and ninth in the Pac-10 at 3-15...opened the season with an 11-3 record, best start to a season since 1992 when ASU reached the Sweet 16... as a team the Sun Devils averaged 2.74 blocks per set, placing them third in the Pac-10 and 13th in the NCAA...team set the all-time single match block record in ASU program history with 21.5 total blocks against Cincinnati on August 29 and also set the second highest team attack percentage in history with a .451 average against UTEP September 4...individual highlights include senior Paige Mittelstaedt posting 10.0 blocks to tie her for second in ASU single-match history on October 3 against Washington State...junior outside hitter Sarah Reaves jumped into the 1,000 kills club and finished the season with 1,308 career kills, placing her seventh all-time in program history...Marina Mercer finished her career with 3,680 assists, which places her third all-time in program history...junior Sarah Reaves and sophomore Sophie Schlagintweit combined for 715 kills on the year for 53 percent of the Sun Devil offense...Reaves led the offense with 459 kills and also collected 15 double-doubles on the season, pushing her career total to 38...Reaves finished ranked fourth and fifth respectively in points per set (4.95) and kills per set (4.33), with a final NCAA ranking of 15th in points per set and 22nd in kills per set...sophomore outside hitter Sofie Schlagintweit served up five service aces against Wyoming on September 19, which tied her for third in ASU history in single-match service aces...sophomore middle Sonja Markanovich posted 10.0 blocks to tie her for second in ASU single-match history on September 19 against Wyoming...freshman Erica Wilson marked the history books as well on August 29 against Cincinnati with 9.0 blocks to tie third in ASU single-match history...the Sun Devils won both the ASU Sheraton Classic and the Holly Young Invitational during tournament play...junior Sarah Reaves earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 for the third consecutive year...Ashley Kastl earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Freshman honors...Sophie Schlagintweit was named to the ESPN the Magazine District VIII All Academic second team...three Sun Devils earned Academic All-Pac-10 honors, including first-team member Sophie Schlagintweit and honorable mentions Sonja Markanovich and Sarah Reaves, which gives ASU 45 all-time Pac-10 Academic Team selections and seven year streak of at least one first-team member.

The Sun Devils posted a 16-15 overall record (0-7 MPSF) and placed eighth at the season-ending MPSF Championships... closed out the year ranked No. 11 nationally... spent the entire year ranked among the Top 10 nationally, climbing as high as No. 6 for a three-week stretch... defeated a pair of higher-ranked teams, including No. 9 Irvine (13-3) as the No. 10 team in the nation and No. 5 Michigan (11-6) as the No. 8 team... opened the month of March on a six-game winning streak, the longest of the season for the team... individually, six different players tallied 25 goals or more on the season, including the trio of Lynlee Smith (51), Shannon Haas (47) and Sarah Harris (38), all who had over 35 goals... Smith led the way overall for the offense as she scored 68 points on the year with 17 assists while Harris (52) and Mariam Salloum (50) both surpassed the 50-point mark... Haas (49), Kelsey White (46) and Annabelle Carter (43) all had over 40 points as well... Salloum led the way in assists with a team-high 27 on the year while Kari Walsh was the only other player with more than 20 with her 21 helpers... overall, Smith led the way with 15 games (out of 31) that she scored two or more goals while Haas was second with 12 and Harris third with 10... in the cage, the duo of Dana Harvey and Amanda Young combined to stop 262 shots with 139 saves and 123 saves, respectively... both women also had multiple games with double digit saves, including Harvey's 14 save performance against No. 9 UC Irvine (W, 13-3) and Young's 12 stop performance against No. 5 Michigan (W, 11-6)... in the post season awards, Haas was selected to the MSPF All-Freshman Team as well as Honorable Mention All-MSPF... Harris and Kelly Phelps joined Haas on the honorable mention team... Haas (March 29) and Harris (April 5) also were selected Mikasa Newcomer of the Week during the season... out of the pool, nine players earned national academic honors from the American Collegiate Water Polo Association, including three on the first team (Becca Clopp, Miles, Salloum)... seven players were selected Academic All-MPSF.

The team posted a 9-7-0 overall record with a 4-2-0 mark in Pac-10 duals and went 3-2-0 in home duals as well... all seven of the team's losses came to opponents ranked in the national Top 25, including teams ranked No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 at the time of the dual... with a 4-2-0 record in the conference, the Sun Devils improved to 86-23-1 all-time in Pac-10 duals... defeated Utah Valley, 27-15, at the Lone Star Duals in Dallas, Texas, to record the 475th win in program history... team defeated intrastate foes Grand Canyon (39-16) and Embry-Riddle (41-4) to improve to 57-9-0 all-time against teams from the state of Arizona... the dual with ERAU saw 1,267 fans inside Wells Fargo Arena, which was the largest for a home dual since the 2005-06 season when 1,306 were on hand to see ASU take on No. 5 Iowa... in tournament action, the team placed 11th at the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational and tied for fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions... finished fourth at the Pac-10 Championships with one champion and 104.5 points scored before placing 29th at the NCAA Championships with one All-American and 18.5 points scored... individually, Anthony Robles captured the Pac-10 title at 125 pounds for the second year in a row and earned his second All-America honor by finishing seventh nationally... Robles led the team with a 32-4 overall record and went 16-0 in duals and 17-4 in tournaments... he also led the team in wins by major decision (six), technical fall (eight) and fall (nine)... Robles was one of five individuals to qualify for the NCAA Championships, including Ben Ashmore (133), Chris Drouin (141), Te Edwards (157) and Erik Nye (heavyweight)... Robles (first), Ashmore (fourth), Drouin (fifth) and Edwards (third) each automatically qualified for the national meet based on qualifying standards set by the NCAA... Nye (sixth) was an at-large selection... academically, Drouin was selected to the NWCA All-Academic team and as an Academic All-Pac-10 First Team honoree... Michael Hawkins, Michael Swigart and Vicente Varela were second team selections from the Pac-10... Ashmore was selected for the Pac-10 Sportsmanship Award and is only the second Sun Devil to earn the honor (Grayling Love, football, 2002).
