ASU: Hard-working local product who steadily improved during his Sun Devil career and rose up the depth chart along the defensive line...was a two-year starter at defensive tackle...played in 46 total contests, starting 22...has collected 55 tackles (26 solo), 13.0 tackles for loss (minus 46 yards), 5.0 sacks (minus 31 yards), two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.

2008: Started nine games as a senior...recorded 14 tackles (four solo), 3.5 tackles for loss (minus nine yards) and 0.5 sacks (minus four yards) on the season...had three tackles (two solo), including two tackles for loss (minus four yards), in season-opening win over Northern Arizona on Aug. 30...posted a season-high five tackles against UNLV on Sept. 13...had a half-sack of quarterback Matthew Stafford against No. 3 Georgia on Sept. 20...collected four tackles (one solo) and had a tackle for loss at California on Oct. 4...returned from injury to start the final game of his collegiate career, at Arizona on Dec. 6.

2007: Started all 13 games at defensive tackle...finished the season with 22 tackles (nine solo), 6.5 tackles for loss (minus 27 yards) and 3.5 sacks (minus 20 yards)...also had one interception, one forced fumble and one pass break-up on the season...in his first career start, against San Jose State on Sept. 1, he had an interception, which he returned 18 yards to set up an ASU touchdown in the second quarter, a sack (minus seven yards) and a forced fumble...recorded a sack in victory over San Diego State on Sept. 15...had two tackles for loss (minus 10 yards), including a seven-yard sack, at Stanford on Sept. 29...collected a season-high four tackles in win at Washington State on Oct. 6...had two tackles, including one tackle for loss, against California on Oct. 27...picked up a half-sack in victory over Arizona on Dec. 1...finished the year by matching his season high with four tackles (two solo) and had a pass break-up in Pacific Life Holiday Bowl against Texas on Dec. 27.

2006: Played in all 13 games...totaled 14 tackles (10 solo), a seven-yard sack, one interception and one forced fumble...had three solo tackles at Colorado on Sept. 16...recorded a pair of assisted tackles against No. 12 Oregon on Sept. 30...totaled two solo tackles against Stanford on Oct. 21, including a seven-yard sack of Cardinal quarterback T.C. Ostrander, resulting in a forced fumble which was recovered Sun Devil teammate Will Kofe...tallied three solo tackles at Washington on Oct. 28...posted a pair of tackles (one solo) at Oregon State on Nov. 4...on Nov. 25, he intercepted a third-quarter pass by Adam Austin of Arizona at the Wildcat 22-yard line, which led to a Dimitri Nance touchdown four plays later...earned Hard Hat Player recognition for his work in the team's winter strength and conditioning program.

2005: Played in 11 games...totaled five tackles (three solo), two tackles for loss (minus-three yards) and two fumble recoveries as a redshirt freshman...tied with three teammates for second on the squad in fumble recoveries...tied defensive back Jeremy Payton as ASU's leader in tackles for loss among freshmen...had a tackle for a two-yard loss in his ASU debut in the season opener against Temple...registered a one-yard tackle for loss at Washington State...recovered a fumble both at Oregon State and against Oregon...did not play at No. 14 UCLA.

2004: Redshirted as a member of the scout team.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2004 graduate of Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz....signed with ASU on March 2, 2004...listed as the No. 16 player in the state of Arizona by SuperPrep Magazine...all-Region selection by PrepStar Magazine...helped lead Hamilton to the state 5A championship against Mountain View in Sun Devil Stadium...selected to the Arizona Republic all-state first team at defensive end both as a senior and as a junior...chosen by the East Valley Tribune as the 2003 Arizona Defensive Player of the Year...started 42 games in his three-year varsity career...left as the school's all-time quarterback sack leader with 25 and a half sacks...recorded one of those sacks in the state title game against fellow ASU signee Max Hall of Mountain View...also finished his career with 247 tackles, 80 quarterback hurries and 17 pass breakups...selected All-Fiesta Region at defensive end as a junior and senior...junior stats were 65 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks...was a nominee for the Ed Doherty Award following his senior season...was only the second defensive lineman to be nominated for the award...played in the Army All-American Bowl Combine as a junior...earned three letters in football and captained his team as a senior...coached by John Wrenn... hails from the same high school that produced former Sun Devil All-American and current Baltimore Raven Terrell Suggs, as well as current Sun Devil Gerald Munns and incoming freshmen Colin Parker and Kerry Taylor.

PERSONAL: Earned his degree (B.I.S., interdisciplinary studies) in May of 2008...contemplating a career as a chef or physical therapist...parents are Patrick (buyer/aerospace) and Christina (security guard) Smith of Gilbert, Ariz....has two sisters, Christina and Vanessa...lists winning the 2003 5A state championship game in triple overtime at Sun Devil Stadium as his most exciting sports experience...enjoys listening to music and working on his truck...born July 12, 1985 in Phoenix...full name is David Joseph Smith.
