Kevin Ramsey enters his first season as Arizona State's cornerbacks coach. A 14-year veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, Ramsey comes to ASU after spending the previous three years as the secondary coach for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
This summer, Ramsey will also serve as an intern and coach players with the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the National Football League's Minority Internship Program.
Ramsey has coached at the highest level of college football, serving as defensive coordinator at the University of Georgia (1999-00) and as secondary coach at the University of Tennessee (1995-99).
In 2002, despite several injuries, Ramsey helped the Cardinal secondary record 17 interceptions and tutored Adrian Wilson to another standout season that included four interceptions and five pass deflections. During his first year with the Cardinals in 2001, Ramsey was forced to start seven combinations in the team's secondary. That year, veteran free safety Kwamie Lassiter led all NFL safeties with a career-high nine interceptions and added a team-best 100 solo tackles.
Ramsey began his coaching career at Kansas State (1984-85) as a graduate assistant and junior varsity defensive coordinator at Mission High School in Mission, Texas (1986) before beginning a successful succession of jobs at major NCAA Division I programs - Kansas State (1987-89, outside linebackers), Northwestern (1990-92, defensive line/defensive backs), West Virginia (1993-94, defensive backs), Tennessee (1995-98, defensive backs) and Georgia (1999, defensive coordinator).
In addition, Ramsey coached in seven high-profile bowl games in the collegiate ranks, including Tennessee's national championship victory over Florida State in the 1999 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium. He also coached in the 2002 Senior Bowl, the 2000 Outback Bowl (Georgia), the 1998 Orange Bowl (Tennessee), the 1996 and 1997 Citrus Bowls (Tennessee), the 1994 Sugar Bowl (West Virginia) and the 1995 Carquest Bowl (West Virginia).
Ramsey also served two NFL internships with Arizona Cardinal head coach Dave McGinnis at the Chicago Bears (1991) and later with the Green Bay Packers (1998). Ramsey spent most of 2000 working for ex-Redskin Danny Buggs' "Winning Circle" non-profit organization which teaches character behavior to students in DeKalb County, Georgia. He also appeared at an 11-day "World Federation of World Peace" symposium in Seoul, South Korea addressing students from around the globe on world issues and culture.
