Player Bio: Brent Guy

Brent Guy is in his fourth season at Arizona State as the Sun Devils' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Guy held the same positions for three seasons at Boise State before coming to ASU.

Under Guy's guidance in 2003, junior Justin Burks and sophomore Jamar Williams emerged as playmakers in ASU's linebacking corps. Burks finished third on the team in total tackles with 78, while Williams led the team with 10.5 tackles per loss and was fifth on the squad in tackles. With the switch to a three-linebacker set in 2004, Guy's linebackers should post even better numbers this year.

In 2002, Guy's potent defensive gameplan forced 19 opponent fumbles (18 recovered by ASU) and 22 interceptions and led the Pac-10 in turnovers. The Sun Devils recorded a mind-boggling 123 tackles for loss, including 52 sacks (second in the Pac-10). Arizona State's defense also held opponents to 30.7 percent on third-down conversions, good for third in the conference, while the Sun Devils' rushing defense was ranked 19th at the end of the regular season in 2002. The season was capped off by a Holiday Bowl performance in which the ASU defense held the K-State offense, ranked No. 1 in the country, scoreless for two quarters.

Guy's leadership with the linebackers was integral to the overall defensive performance in 2002. Mason Unck, who signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns, finished with 111 tackles on the year, including 14.5 tackles for loss. Unck's six forced fumbles were tied for the most in the Pac-10, while fellow linebacker Josh Amobi recovered four fumbles, which tied for the most in the conference.

In 2000, Guy's defense led the Big West Conference in total defense (367.5 yds/game), scoring defense (22.8 pts/game), rushing defense (139.2 yds/game) and turnover margin (0.73).

Additionally, the Broncos were first in sacks (31) and allowed opponents to convert only five fourth-down attempts in 18 tries, also tops in the conference. In 1999, the Bronco defense was ranked 28th nationally, allowing just 20.5 points per game, and led the Big West Conference in total defense.

Guy also had two stints as linebacker coach at his alma mater, Oklahoma State. From 1995-97, Guy helped to lead the Cowboys' rush defense to a final ranking of 10th in the country. He also tutored the linebackers at OSU from 1989-91.

From 1992-94, Guy coached the linebackers at Utah State, helping to guide the Aggies to the 1993 Big West title and a victory over Ball State in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first bowl appearance in school history. In his career, Guy has participated in nine bowl games as a player and a coach and coached six players who have gone onto the NFL.

A three-year letterwinner at Oklahoma State, Guy earned his degree in 1983. He and his teammates still hold the Oklahoma State school record for total defense, allowing just 258.0 yards per game in 1981. Guy, and his wife, Shawn, have two children, Madison (13) and Riley (7).
