Sun Devils Roar Back to Defeat Beavers in Five Games

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Opposite hitter Shawna Vanley had 10 kills and four block assists as the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Oregon State Beavers, 3-2, on Friday night in Corvallis, Oregon. Game scores were 4-15, 1-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-10.
The Devils battled back from a two game deficit to win the final three games and the match. One of the keys to the victory was the superb blocking effort in the final three games.
The Sun Devils outblocked the Beavers 17-8. The 17 total team blocks was a season-high for Arizona State.
"It was a total team effort," ASU head coach Patti Snyder-Park said of the close match. "We had great performances from Shawna Vanley and Ashley Ottman."
Sophomore middle blocker Ashley Ottman was a spark off the bench with two block solos and four block assists. Senior Terri Cox added 10 kills and 15 digs. Setter Jolynn Faatulu had 35 assists and 10 digs on the evening.
Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson, who had six block assists on the night, went down in the fourth game with a sprain to her right ankle. She is doubtful for Saturday's match.
Arizona State is now 13-13 overall, 4-11 in the conference.
Arizona State play Oregon tomorrow night in continued Pac-10 action.
