Women's Volleyball Opens with Two Wins
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State (2-0) opened it's 1997 volleyball campaign with two victories at the Phoenix Airport Hilton/Sun Devil Classic.
In the opener, the Sun Devils swept St. Mary's College (15-9, 15-12, 15-11) to begin the new season. Arizona State was lead by the strong play of seniors Terri Cox and Kirstin Mattson as well as junior Jen Lucero. Cox and Mattson finished the match with eight kills each. Mattson added seven blocks to the effort while Lucero finished with a game-high 12 digs. St. Mary's was paced by Ana Nelson's 10 kills and Whitney Hoover's seven digs.
The Sun Devils outplayed Portland State University 15-7, 15-8, 14-16 and 15-11 in their second game. Cox lead all players with 22 kills and 18 digs. Teammate Lucero added 14 kills and 14 digs. Christy Orona had 15 kills for Portland State.
In the day's other matches, Cal Poly SLO (2-0) took two victories, scoring 15-9, 6-15, 15-7 and 15-10 over Portland State (0-2) and 15-6, 15-12 and 15-5 over St. Mary's (0-2). Kari DeSoto had a game-high 13 kills to help lead the Mustangs to their first victory and added 11 kills during the second game.
The Phoenix Airport Hilton/ Sun Devil Classic concludes with two games tomorrow. The day's action begins at 1 p.m. with Portland State taking on St. Mary's. The final game of the Classic features ASU and Cal Poly SLO at 3 p.m.
