ASU Wins First Match of Volleyball Season
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State opened the 1997 volleyball season with a three-game win over St. Mary's 15-4, 15-4, 15-10 at the Phoenix Airport Hilton/Sun Devil Challenge. ASU featured a balanced attack with five players recording five or more kills. Kirstin Mattson and Terri Cox paced ASU with eight a piece. Jolynn Faatulu registered 23 assists while Jen Lucero notched 12 digs.
The Sun Devils, joined by St. Mary's Cal Poly SLO and Portland State, continue play in the tournament Friday night and Saturday. ASU takes on Portland State at 7 p.m. Friday and Cal Poly SLO Saturday at 3 p.m.
In Friday's other morning match, Cal Poly SLO defeated Portland State 15-9, 6-15, 15-7, 15-10.
