TEMPE, Ariz. -- Outside hitter Carolyn Penfield recorded a career-high 33 kills as #15 Arizona defeated Arizona State in four games at the University Activity Center tonight. Game scores were 15-7, 6-15, 17-15 and 15-5.
Penfield's kill mark ranks her the fourth highest total in Arizona history. She completed her double-double with 13 digs and also added six blocks. Teammate setter Michaela Ebben added seven kills and eight blocks for the Wildcats.
Game three turned out to be the pivotal match, when it saw six game points for the Sun Devils and five for the Wildcats before Arizona pulled out the victory, 17-15.
"I guess it's not our year against U of A," head coach Patti Snyder-Park said. "They were mentally tougher than us down the stretch and we couldn't get enough consistency out of some of our key people."
Senior outside hitter Terri Cox also scored a double-double, contributing 20 kills and 15 digs in the losing effort. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson and freshman outside hitter Amanda Burbridge added 15 and 11 kills respectively for the team.
The Wildcats improve to 15-3, 7-3 in the conference.
Arizona State (12-9, 3-7 Pac-10) travels to Washington State Oct. 31 and Washington Nov. 1 in continuing Pac-10 action.
