OFF THE TEE: One of the top local players the past decade years in Arizona prep golf…has played in seven tournaments in his first two years and will look to challenge for a lineup spot this year…the Arizona state champion in 1999…a 1999 graduate of Phoenix Brophy Preparatory…father, David, played golf for ASU from 1971-74…also played basketball in high school…enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities…been slowed by injuries to his back and left knee the past two years…tied for second at the 2002 AGA Father-Son Tournament with a 4-under 140 (71-69)…won the 2002 Scottsdale Amateur with an 11-under 133 (67-66)…finished third at the 2001 Arizona Public Links Championship on March 24-25, at Aguila Golf Course with a 6-under 138 (70-68) and also finished second at the Scottsdale City Amateur (67-68=135).
MAKING HISTORY IN 2001: Michael Derminio and his father made golf history in the summer of 2001. For the first time in 43 years, there was a father-son combination in the starting field at the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 20 in Atlanta. Michael and his father, 48-year old David of Fallbrook, Calif., not only each qualified but also caddied for each other in section qualifying. It was the first time since the father-son team of Dick Chapman, the 1940 U.S. Amateur Champion, and Dixie Chapman, 16, competed in 1958 when the championship was strictly match-play (no on-site qualifying). Neither Derminio was able to make stroke play, as David shot 82-81=163 while Mike had 73-77=150.
BROPHY PREPARATORY: Won the western region in 1995, 1996 and 1998…was the 1999 state champion with a 13-under 131 (65-66), a seven-stroke winner…won four high school tournaments in 1998…won the 1999 Thunderbird Invitational…won the Father-Son Arizona Championship…finished second at the Music City Team Championships in Nashville…won the Brophy Invitational…fifth in AJGA championship in 1999.
ETC.: Born July 28, 1980, in Tulsa, Okla….majoring in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in business and history…father is David and mother is Maria…has an older sister, Christina, and younger brothers, Stephen and Matthew, and younger sisters, Nicole and Lauren.
