Player Bio: Ryan Whitaker :: Men's Golf



 

OFF THE TEE: Earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors in 2000-2001 and second-team honors in 1999-2000…one of the hardest working players on the team…shot a 61 at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course in a non-competitive round on Aug. 23, 1999…won the Wenatchee (Wash.) Pro-Am in the summers of 1998 and 1999…redshirted in his initial season (1997-98)…very athletic…played four sports in high school…a two-time state champion in Washington.

2000-2001: Played in five tournaments and had a 77.53 stroke average…finished sixth at the Cal State Northridge Intercollegiate on Nov. 16-17, 2000, at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif….shot a 74-70-79 for a 7-over 223 at the tourney…shot a five-over 221, including a 72 in the final round at the ASU Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational on April 13-14…a first-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection.

1999-2000: Played in three tournaments and had a 74.67 stroke average…played in the Ping/Arizona Intercollegiate, the Southwestern Classic and the ASU Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational…shot an 8-over 224 (73-81-70) and tied for 62nd at Thunderbird Invitational…posted low round of 70 in second round of Ping/Arizona Intercollegiate…a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection.

SUMMER OF 2000: Finished 13th in BMW Washington Open, a pro event, with a 5-over 221 (72-69-80) at the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge…medalist in the PNGA Championship and Banden Dunes, Ore….qualified for the U.S. Amateur at the Mesa Country Club with a 139 (69-70), which tied for third…missed cut at U.S. Amateur at Springfield, N.J. with a 151 (75-76).

1998-99: Competed in two tournaments in 1998-99 and had a 77.83 stroke average…played at the Countrywide Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-20 at Simi Valley, Calif., and shot a 244 (84-83-77)…also played in the ASU Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational and finished at 7-over 223 (75-73-75).

SUMMER OF 1999: Posted a 72.1 scoring average in 21 tournament rounds in the summer, mostly in the Pacific northwest…played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Sectional Qualifier at Papago Golf Club in mid-June and shot a 3-under-par 141 (71-70), which tied for fifth and earned him alternate status…won two pro-ams in Washington by shooting a 2-under 70 at Wenatchee and a 3-under 68 at Moses Lake…advanced to third-round at the PNGA Amateur held at Inglewood Country Club…shot three rounds of 68 (-10) at three different courses at the Yakima Amateur…finished 26th at the Washington Amateur at Fort Lewis (72-70-76-79)…finished with a 73 and was second at the Washington Amateur Qualifier at Lake Padden.

SUMMER OF 1998: Placed first at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Qualifier in Riverbend, Wash., with a 69…was fourth in the Public Links Qualifier with a 145 (74-71)…also was fourth at the Yakima Amateur with a 219 (73-71-75)…finished 21st at the Washington Amateur with a 300 (69-77-84-70)…was first at the Wenatchee Pro-Am with a 74.

CLE ELUM HIGH SCHOOL: Played four sports and earned letters in baseball (two), basketball (two), cross country (two) and golf (three)…played at Cle Elum High in the Yakima Valley West League…won two straight state titles in golf and three straight district titles…tied for sixth at the Junior World Championships.

ETC.: Major is sociology with a minor in humanities…parents are Tom (psychologist) and Peg (librarian) Whitaker of Cle Elum, Wash.…has a younger brother, Dan…cousin, Jenny, played soccer at Montana while grandfather, John, was a national and Big Ten champion wrestler for Minnesota in 1936…born Sept. 30, 1978, in Bellevue, Wash.…full name is Ryan Baisch Whitaker.
