Player Bio: Tyson Johnston :: Men's Basketball



 

WHAT TO KNOW: Johnston sat last year after transferring from Utah in the summer of 1999, but has three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2000-2001. In September, he measured in at 6-11 1/2 in socks, so we list him at 7-0. The Colorado native has gained about 20 pounds since the end of last season and just turned 21 years old this past October. He was a member of Utah team that went 14-0 in 1998-99 regular season and he played in 22 games for Utah in 1998-99 and averaged 4.7 minutes per game. Tyson also played in nine Western Athletic Conference games and averaged 5.8 minutes and saw action against Arizona State on November 23 in Maui Invitational. He posted two points and three boards in season opener against Azusa Pacific and had four rebounds vs. San Diego State on Feb. 11. He also had four points vs. New Mexico on February 27, but did not play in the final four games. In front of him in the rotation were Hanno Mottola, Alex Jensen and Nate Alhoff in his freshman year at Utah. ASU recruited him out of high school and he also was recruited by Oregon when he decided to transfer from Utah. Current ASU coach Tony Benford recruited Johnston out of high school when Benford was an assistant at New Mexico.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS (COLO.) HIGH SCHOOL: Averaged 17.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and eight blocks per game…set the Colorado state record with 409 blocks in his career…led state in rebounds as a senior with 276…shot 59 percent from the field…all-conference first-team pick for three seasons…all-state for two seasons…nominated for McDonald's All-American Team…led high school squad to 21-2 record and state semifinal berth…high school coach was Kelly Meek…a top 100 player coming out of high school by Bob Gibbons.
