In April of 2002 he broke his fibula just above his right ankle in a dirt bike accident and had to have surgery. Crandall played in the Maui Invitational twice (1998 and 2002) and was a high school and college basketball teammate of current Baltimore Raven and Pro Bowl tight end Todd Heap.

Played through pain in his leg throughout his junior year (2002-2003) and made 17-of-20 (.850) free throws, including 9-of-10 (.900) in conference play, as ASU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995. Crandall actually could not practice in his freshman year until November due to an NCAA Clearinghouse matter. His collegiate career began at the Maui Invitational at halftime of a game. Crandall became eligible while the team was on the road and slept at the San Francisco Airport rather than go to a hotel when his plane was delayed. He arrived in Maui at about 10:45 a.m., 15 minutes before ASU tipped off against Kansas State. He got a ride to the game, which was about an hour away, put on his uniform and entered the game in the second half with 12:29 left played 10 minutes.
