JEREMY VEAL
BACKGROUND
Finished his four-year career as Arizona State's leading scorer with 1,984 career points. Increased his shooting percentage in each season and did not miss a game in his 122-game career. Earned All-Pac-10 honors twice in his career, an accomplishment notched by just three other Sun Devils. Finished his career with 46 20-point games and five 30-point outings. Forced to play the point guard slot in junior year and was among the league leaders in both points and assists. Shot nearly 80 percent from the free throw line in his career, including 82.5 percent in his freshman season. Became just the fourth Pac-10 player to notch 1,900 points (1,984) and 400 assists (413), joining Gary Payton, Sean Elliott and Ron Lee. Finished his career in strong fashion, as he had 13 20-point games in his final 16 contests. Ended his career 13th on the Pac-10 career scoring list with 1,984 points. Played in the 1998 NABC All-Star game at the Final Four in San Antonio.
As a senior, Veal became just the second Sun Devil to lead the Pac-10 in scoring with 20.8 points per game (Byron Scott was the other with a 21.6 ppg mark in 1982-83). Earned All-Pac-10 and honorable mention All-America by Associated Press with 20 games of at least 20 points and was ASU's top scorer in 20 games and top rebounder in six contests. Posted seven straight games of at least 20 points in January, the top ASU streak since the 1989-90 season. Averaged 37.5 minutes per game overall, 38.8 minutes in Pac-10 play and played 40 minutes in 10 contests. Posted 27 points at then fourth-ranked Stanford on Jan. 31. Averaged 21.2 points in Pac-10 play and led ASU in scoring in 12 of the final 15 games. Averaged 25.5 points against top-five teams, with 29 vs. Kansas, 22 at Arizona, 27 at Stanford and 24 vs. Arizona. Also had 25 at Cincinnati.
As a junior, Veal earned All-Pac-10 after finishing in the leagues top five in scoring (18.7/fourth) and assists (4.7/fifth), a feat matched only five times by three players since 1983, all of them top NBA point guards (Damon Stoudamire, Terrell Brandon and Gary Payton). Also was third in the league in three-point shooting (.443) and tenth in free throw shooting (.774). Notched 13 20-point games for the second straight year and was the team's top scorer in 18 games and top assist man in 13 contests. Posted 30 points at Washington on Jan. 30 and 31 vs. Washington on Feb. 27. Played at least 40 minutes in seven games and was in double-digits in 28-of-30 games. Had 27 points at national champion Arizona on Feb. 5. One of just two players (Brevin Knight the other) to rank among the league's top ten in scoring, assists, three-point percentage and free throw percentage on the year.
In sophomore year of 1995-96, Veal's 18.9 scoring mark was the third-best mark in the league as he posted 13 20-point games and was the only Sun Devil to start in all 27 games. Averaged 34.2 minutes per game, the top mark on the team, and shot .819 from the free throw line, good enough for sixth in the Pac-10. Led ASU in scoring in 12 games and averaged 19.5 points in Pac-10 play, which led the team.
ASU advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 1994-95, Veal's freshman year, as he played in all 33 games, which tied a school freshman record. Hit a big three-pointer late in the 1995 NCAA Tournament game against Manhattan game to seal the win and send ASU to its only Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1975. Averaged 10.3 points (third on the team) and was 9-of-19 (.474) from the three-point stripe in NCAA Tournament play. Played 23.5 minutes per game on the year and started the final four games of the year. Averaged 11.2 points in his final five games and had 11 games of double-digit points. Posted a season-high of 19 points vs. Washington State and shot .825 from the free throw line, the best mark on the squad, and was 18-of-22 (.818) from the free throw line in Pac-10 play.
Scored 10 points and had five assists in NABC All-Star Game on March 27 in San Antonio. Was 4-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the three-point stripe and grabbed two rebounds in 21:23.
