Arizona State Pulls It Out in Pullman
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Eddie House hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 16 seconds left as Arizona State erased a late 5-point deficit to edge Washington State 86-85 on Sunday.
The Sun Devils (12-5, 2-2 Pacific-10 Conference) scored the final six points of the game to snap a five-game losing streak to the Cougars (7-7, 0-3) and a 13-game losing streak on the road in Pac-10 play.
Arizona State last beat Washington State on Feb. 5, 1995, and hadn't won in Pullman since 1992.
The Sun Devils led 78-74 with 3:10 remaining before Washington State recaptured the lead with a 7-0 scoring run.
Washington State increased its lead to 85-80 before Urit Kelly was fouled by Carlos Daniel and hit one of two free throws with 34 seconds to go.
Jeremy Veal grabbed the rebound from Kelly's missed second free throw and hit a jumper to move Arizona State within 85-83.
Daniel missed a pair of free throws on WSU's next possession, and House hit his game-winning shot to close out scoring in the game.
Ahlon Lewis missed a pair of free throws with eight seconds left on Arizona State's final possession. Daniel had a chance to win the game with a jump shot at the buzzer, but it bounced out.
Veal led Arizona State with 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting and seven rebounds. Mike Batiste added six rebounds.
Daniel, who scored 28 points in a 94-81 loss to No. 5 Arizona on Thursday, matched that scoring total on Sunday and tied his career high. He finished 9-of-19 from the field and had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Chris Crosby added 17 points for Washington State and Will Hutchens finished with a career-high 12 points. Blake Pengelly had a career-high eight assists.
Arizona State was outrebounded 46-34 and trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and 49-41 at the break.
But the Sun Devils committed just one turnover in the second half to finish with 11 for the game to WSU's 20.
Arizona State shot 46 percent from the field to Washington State's 45 percent. The Sun Devils were 6-for-15 from 3-point range to the Cougars' 8-for-24.
