Player Bio: Sergio Garcia



ASU: Not to be confused with the world-class professional golfer, this Sergio Garcia comes to Arizona State after hitting .311 and earning All-Big 12 honorable mention honors in 2001... most Sun Devils will remember him for trying to run over former Sun Devil catcher Casey Myers at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City last year on a play at the plate... Garcia transferred to Oklahoma from Cerritos CC in Southern California.

2001 (Oklahoma): Starting shortstop for the Sooner baseball team under head coach and former Sun Devil Larry Cochell... finished third on the team with .311 batting average while starting all 59 games... was named honorable mention All-Big 12... Oklahoma finished the year 25-33-1... recorded 20 multi-hit games, with a career-high four-hit game vs. Centenary (4/29)... had seven multi-RBI games and recorded a hit in 44 of his 59 games played... longest hitting streak of the season was 11 games (3/17-4/6) in which he combined to go 21-for-43 (.488)... best game of the year came vs. Centenary (4/29), falling just a single short of hitting for the cycle... went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, four RBI, a double, two triples and a home run... in only game vs. Arizona State, went 1-for-6 with one RBI and was thrown out at home plate on a play in which he tried to run over Sun Devil All-American catcher Casey Myers... played with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in summer of 2001, hitting .240 with 11 stolen bases.

Junior College: Transferred to Oklahoma from Cerritos CC in Cerritos, Calif... selected to the West Coast Conference (junior college) honorable mention team in 2000 after hitting .330 with two home runs and 40 RBI... earned league and team MVP honors in 1999 after hitting .390 with four home runs and 47 RBI... helped lead Cerritos to conference championship each year... coached by Ken Gaylord.

High School: Lettered three seasons under the direction of head coach Kris Jondell at St. John Bosco High School... played center field during his high school career... named first-team all-league junior and senior years.

Personal: Majoring in interdisciplinary studies... son of Manuel and Maria Garcia... has an older sister (Bertha) and an older brother (Jose)... enjoys lifting weights, eating, watching ESPN and "just hanging out"... played against Sun Devil junior catcher Dennis Wyrick in high school... born March 29, 1980 in Torrance, Calif.
