ASU Completes Sweep of Hawaii-Hilo, Comes Home 8-0
HILO, Hawaii - The Arizona State baseball team completed a five-game sweep of the University of Hawaii-Hilo with a 14-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon in Kona, Hawaii.
Freshman Chad Pennington, in his first collegiate start, picked up the win for the Devils on the mound pitching 7.2 innings of two-hit ball. The Ohio native picked up eight strikeouts on the afternoon as well. Senior Aaron Kramer (Pheonix, Ariz.) and junior Chuck Crumpton (Mesquite, Tex.) combined with Pennington for the shutout.
Despite high winds, gusting up to 50 mph, the Devils put on an offensive show, scoring 14 runs on 13 hits. Senior outfielder Mikel Moreno (Mesa, Ariz.) went three-for-six with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the squad. Freshman infielder Jeff Phelps (Yuma, Ariz.) added two hits and three runs to the Sun Devil totals. Sophomore outfielder Dustin Delucchi (Burlingame, Calif.) chipped in three RBI on a one-for-four effort and managed the games only extra-base hit with a double in the top of the ninth. Arizona State also stole six bases for the game and laid down four sacrifice bunts.
On Saturday, ASU swept a doubleheader with Hawaii-Hilo winning 13-2 and 5-1. In the first game, sophomore Jay Gehrke (Fargo, N.D.) pitched a complete game allowing only two hits while striking out four.
The Sun Devils accumulated 13 runs on 15 hits including a seven run third inning to continue their hit parade. Sophomore Willie Bloomquist (Port Orchard, Wash.) went two-for-two with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior thirdbaseman Andrew Beinbrink (San Diego, Calif.) turned in a two-for-three effort with two RBI and one run scored. Junior transfer Dan Meier (Aurora, Colo.) went two-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI on the afternoon.
In the second game, junior Colin "C.J." Call (Scottsdale, Ariz.), in his first collegiate start, picked up the win throwing 5.1 innings of one-hit ball. Call struck out four while allowing only one run.
Offensively, Andrew Beinbrink went two-for-three with one run scored and one RBI to lead the Devils. Junior Ian "Chip" Gosewisch turned in a one-for-two performance with two RBI, one run scored and two walks.
