No. 5 ASU Downs New Mexico State 13-1 in Louisville Slugger Classic
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The fifth-ranked Arizona State baseball team (2-0, 0-0) defeated New Mexico State (1-1, 0-0) 13-1 in front of 1,439 fans in the Louisville Slugger Classic at Packard Stadium tonight.
The Sun Devils were led by junior third baseman Andrew Beinbrink who went 2-for-5 including a home run. Beinbrink knocked in three and scored two. Junior Chip Gosewisch who went 2-for-2 in only three innings also scored two and drove in three. Freshman Casey Myers went 2-for-4 and senior Richy Leon went 2-for-3 to chip in for the Devils.
Coach Pat Murphy was pleased by the outing.
" I am very pleased with the overall performance and the pitching performance. "
Junior lefthander Ryan Mills (1-0) picked up the win for the Devils, pitching a scoreless six innings. Mills gave up a scant three hits, no runs, and struck out 11 in the victory. Mills felt comfortable back out on the mound for the Devils.
" I was nervous at first, but once I settled in I was fine."
New Mexico State was led by Cory Smith who hit a home run in the top of the ninth to give the Aggies their only run of the game. Starting pitcher Justin Masters (0-1) took the loss going two innings, and giving up eight earned runs.
The Sun Devils face Florida International tomorrow night, January 24 at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium in their final game of the Louisville Slugger Classic. Righthanded pitcher Jay Gehrke (0-0) is expected to take the mound for ASU.
Cal Poly SLO will face New Mexico State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in continued Louisville Slugger Classic action.
