No. 5 Arizona State Downs Cal State-Northridge 7-3

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The fifth-ranked Arizona State baseball team (1-0, 0-0) defeated Cal State Northridge (1-3, 0-0) 7-3 in front of 1,509 fans in the Louisville Slugger Classic at Packard Stadium tonight.

The Sun Devils were led by Chip Gosewisch who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore left fielder Willie Bloomquist went 2-for-3 with two walks and one run scored.

Junior lefthander Phill Lowery (1-0) picked up the win for the Devils, pitching a superb seven innings. Lowery gave up a scant three hits, struck out five, and allowed no earned runs. Junior transfer Chuck Crumpton got his first save of the season going two innings, giving up only two hits.

Cal State Northridge was led by third baseman Chris McMillan, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. Starting pitcher Jose Vasquez (0-1) picked up the loss for the Matadors going three and two-thirds innings, giving up eight hits, and six earned runs.

The Sun Devils face New Mexico State tomorrow night, January 23 at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium in their second game of the Louisville Slugger Classic. Lefthanded pitcher Ryan Mills (0-0) is expected to take the mound for ASU. Righthander Justin Masters (0-0) is the probable starter for New Mexico State.

Cal Poly SLO will face Florida International at 11 a.m. tomorrow and Cal State Northridge will take on FIU at 3 p.m. in continued Louisville Slugger Classic action.
