Sun Devil Soccer in Top 10 Percent in Nation in Academic Progress Rate Scores (6-14-12)
Named the third coach in the history of the ASU women's soccer program on March 30, 2007.
Boyd has led the Sun Devil soccer program to the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four seasons (2009, 2010, 2012).
This past season, Boyd oversaw the development of a relatively young team (nearly half the team was comprised of newcomers) that went from starting the season 1-4-1 to ending it with the program's third NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons. The Sun Devils clinched their NCAA Tournament berth by going unbeaten in the season's final five games (4-0-1).
The 2012 team finished tied for fourth in the Pac-12, ASU's best finish in league play since 2004.
In 2010, guided the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, only the second time in school history that ASU has made back-to-back NCAA appearances.
In 2009, his third season on the job, Boyd led ASU to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2003. Along the way, the Sun Devils broke into the NSCAA Top 25 for the first time since the 2004 preseason.
In 2008 the Sun Devils nearly qualified for the NCAA Tournament despite losing six players to season ending injuries. ASU's 8-8-4 record included a win against seventh-ranked and defending national champion USC, ASU's first win over a Top-10 squad since 2001. In 2008 the Sun Devils also defeated No. 20 UC Santa Barbara and recorded ties at seventh-ranked Texas and at No. 22 California.
In 2007, Boyd's first season at ASU, the Sun Devils produced a double-digit win total (10-9-1) for the first time since 2003.
On the academic side, the Sun Devils have earned 70 Pac-10/12 All-Academic citations in Boyd's six seasons, including 19 first-team members and 10 second-team members. ASU's 16 first-team commendations the last five seasons (2008-12) are the most of any school in the Pac-12 during that span. In addition, soccer student-athletes have combined for six Academic All-America awards since 2007. In 2007-08 the Sun Devils' 3.55 cumulative GPA was among the top 15 in the country according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
In June 2012, Sun Devil Soccer was among three ASU teams recognized by the NCAA for recording an Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent nationally.
Prior to coming to Arizona State spent 10 seasons as the head coach at California where he complied 130-63-20 record and led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Tournament eight times.
Under Boyd the Golden Bears produced 28 first or second-team All-Pac-10 Conference selections while also garnering 21 selections to the Academic All-Pac-10 first or second teams. Additionally, Boyd's teams carried a stellar overall GPA, leading all Cal teams during the 2003-04 season (3.34).
In his final season at California he led the Golden Bears to the third round, their deepest run in the tournament in nearly 20 years.
Outside of his duties with the Cal program, Boyd also worked with several club teams in the Bay Area. In 2002, he led the U18 Marin Rockers to the Cal North state title and also worked with the U17 Cal North state team. Boyd also has held several positions with the Region IV Olympic Development program, including: regional team coach (1992-00), U15 head coach (1998-00), U16 assistant coach (1996), U17 assistant coach (1993-95) and staff coach (1992-93).
Attended Tri-State University in Angola, Ind., where he was a four-year letter winner. An honorable mention All-American in 1989, Boyd was a three-time team captain for the Trojans while earning three all-district selections, three all-area selections and three all-MICL selections as a sweeper. For his efforts, he was inducted into the Tri-State Hall of Fame.
Played one year of international soccer as a member of Hamar Kameratena, a Norwegian Elite team in the country's First Division. From there, Boyd was a member of the Region IV men's open team (1991-93).
Holds several coaching licenses, including a USSF National `A' Coaching License, a USSF National Youth Coaching License and a NSCAA Premier Coaching Diploma (passed with distinction).
