COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Following divers Hailey Casper and Harrison Jones from the day before, freshman Morgan Weller and junior Riley McCormick qualified for the NCAA Championships at Zone E Diving Championships, Friday, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Freshman Morgan Weller earned her inaugural trip to the NCAA Championships with a combination of her two totals from the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Weller finished in fifth on the 3-meter and eighth on the 1-meter to secure her the seventh qualifying spot to NCAA’s. The women’s diving competition will send nine divers to NCAA’s. Sophomore Sydney Czaus will compete on platform on Saturday for one of the two remaining spots for the NCAA Championships.
Junior Olympian Riley McCormick, with his first appearance of the season at Pac-12 Championships qualifying him for Zone E Championships, also punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships, finishing third on the 3-meter springboard and fifth on the 1-meter. With McCormick and Jones through the qualifier, the Arizona State men have no more spots needed to fill.
The qualifying process for NCAA Zone Diving competitions uses a process of elimination, shown below with the help of Swimming World. If a diver qualifies for NCAA’s in a previous event, the open spots shift up until eight or nine divers have earned qualifying marks.
The meet will send eight men and nine women in total to the NCAA Championships. The women's and men’s swimming and diving NCAA Championships will both be held in Indianapolis, Ind., with the women competing Mar. 21-23 and the men competing Mar. 28-30.
