TEMPE, Ariz.--Arizona State women's tennis player Michelle Brycki has been named the Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award winner for the Southwest Region, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced. The national award winner will be announced May 22.
Brycki, a native of Sydney, Australia, is currently the only student-athlete at Arizona State managing the course load from the nationally-ranked Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and athletic competition. A two-time Pac-12 All-Academic, Brycki was the only play in head coach Sheila McInerney's tenure at Arizona State to finish the dual season undefeated in 2010.
The ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award is given by the to a junior or senior that has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and unwavering dedication to her team; with exceptional hard work, courage, sportsmanship and a positive, cooperative attitude that makes people around her play better. Scholastic, extracurricular achievements and playing accomplishments are also part of the selection criteria.
