Sun Devil Soccer Signs Two International Players to Letters of Intent

March 17, 2012

TEMPE, Ariz.- Arizona State University head women's soccer coach Kevin Boyd today announced that Nina Brueggemann and Christina Schedel, both members of Germany's national team, have signed national letters of intent to study and play soccer at Arizona State.

Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Brueggemann is the first German player to play at ASU. She plays for Hamburger SV, also commonly referred to as HSV. In 2010, she started and played every game at the center back with HSV Bundesliga 2. Within the next year, she helped promote her team to arguably one of the highest levels in the world - Bundesliga 1. Brueggemann has also been an active member of the German National Team receiving caps for U15, U16 and U19.

"Nina comes from Bundesliga 1, which is one of the best leagues in the world in terms of depth of talent with a ton of national team players from full national teams across the country," Boyd said. "She has a lot of international experience and is very technical. She's got size and is very good in the air. She has a lot of pieces she can bring to our team."

Schedel will also be coming to ASU from Germany, where she plays for FC Bayern Munich Bundesliga 2 team. For the past three years, Christina has also been an active member of the German National Team. She helped lead her U16 German team to a second-place finish in the Nordic Cup and her U17 team to a third-place finish at the European Championships. She's also the captain of the Bavarian state-select team.

"Christina is also with the German youth national pool," Boyd said. "She played in an age group one year younger than Nina. She's an excellent one-on-one defender and is very strong physically. She's also quite good on the ball. She's simple and technical and can handle and deliver balls comfortably to start the attack."

The signing of Brueggemann and Schedel gives the Sun Devils nine signees in the 2012 class. They join McKenzie Berryhill, Alina Cheatham, Cali Farquharson, Tommi Goodman, Lucero Lara, Rachel Ometer, and Sara Tosti, who signed national letters of intent in February.
