TEMPE, Ariz. - Three Sun Devil baseball student-athletes were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District baseball team it was announced today. Junior outfielder Andy Workman and sophomore designated hitter Joey DeMichele each garnered First Team District VIII honors, while sophomore shortstop Deven Marrero was named to the Second Team.
Workman (Chandler, Ariz.) won the NCAA Elite 88 Award last season for having the highest GPA at the College World Series. He carries a 3.94 GPA as a finance major. He is hitting .333 with a homer and 14 RBI in 24 games so far this season.
DeMichele (Phoenix, Ariz.) carries a 3.35 GPA as a finance major. He leads the Sun Devils with his .378 average with five homers and 29 RBI.
Marrero (Davie, Fla.) is a criminal justice major with a 3.31 GPA. He is batting .340 with two homers and 15 RBI this year.
Arizona State was one of five Pac-10 schools to place a player on either the First or Second Team and the only Pac-10 with multiple selections. ASU, Utah Valley and Portland were the only schools with two First Team members.
By virtue of their First Team selections, both Workman and DeMichele are now eligible for Academic All-American honors. To be eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must be in their second year at an institution and carry a minimum 3.30 grade point average.
