STANFORD, Calif.--Battling into the singles and doubles rounds of 16 at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships, both Jacqueline Cako and the doubles pair of Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna dropped their matches on Saturday to conclude the season for the Sun Devils.
Playing in singles, Cako lost her match-up with California’s Mari Andersson as the Golden Bear took the match 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.
“Jacqueline did not play as well as she can but a lot of that had to do with how well Mari played,” said head coach Sheila McInerney. “She didn’t give Jacqueline any free points and was the more aggressive player.”
While the Sun Devil All-American was able to get a few points early in the first set, Andersson was just too dominant in the contest.
“Give credit to Mari as she controlled the match start to finish,” said McInerney. “While Jacqueline did not play her best today she has had an excellent year and with her work ethic and talent she will continue to get better.”
In doubles, the duo of Hein/McKenna took on the tough pair of Stanford’s Barte/Burdette, playing on the Cardinal’s home court.
“Kelcy and Micaela got off to a very good start and just couldn’t quite finish the first set,” said McInerney. “Once Barte and Burdette won the first set they really got on a good roll and were hard to beat.”
The Sun Devils dropped the match 7-5, 6-2 to the Cardinal to close out the season.
