NCAA Singles Championship Bracket
STANFORD, Calif.—Senior Kelcy McKenna and freshman Jacqueline Cako both advance to the NCAA women’s tennis singles Championships round of 32 after defeating their first round opponents Wednesday in Stanford, Calif.
With both players dropping the first set of each of their matches, McKenna and Cako found their stride battling into three sets to take the matches.
“After getting off to slow starts I thought both Kelcy and Jacqueline played very well,” said head coach Sheila McInernery. “They ended their matches in a strong fashion.
McKenna, who faced William and Mary’s Jeltje Loomans, lost a hard fought first set 5-7, only to come back to defeat the W&M freshman 7-5, 6-4 in the final two sets. Prior to facing 19th-ranked McKenna, Loomans had tallied a three-match win streak heading into the NCAA Championships.
Cako also went to three sets, facing Olivia Janowicz of the 2011 NCAA Champion Florida Gators. The 12th-ranked freshman dropped the first set 3-6, only to rally and defeat Janowicz decisively, 6-1, 6-0, in the final two sets.
“I feel the tough three-setters should help them be match ready for tomorrow,” said McInerney. “Both Kelcy and Jacqueline are excited to move on.”
The second round of singles competition continues Thursday from Stanford, Calif. The NCAA doubles Championship also begins Thursday with Micaela Hein and McKenna representing Arizona State in the competition.
