Quotes
Head coach Dennis Erickson
On the assessment of the Spring Game:
"Defensively we played vanilla. We didn't blitz or anything like that. It's probably as good of performance offensively we've had since I've been the coach here. So that's good. That's a real, real positive. The other thing it tells you is be ready to play when you line up because if you're not ready to play, I don't care if it's a scrimmage or a game, you better be ready to play. The game is about emotion. I thought we caught the football better than we have in a while. We got better. We need to continue to get better on offense and get back to where we're playing the type of defense we usually play."
On Mike Bercovici and the No. 2 QB spot:
"He's got a lot to learn. He's got a lot of God given talent. Great arm, great release. It's not seven on seven. I couldn't give you who is number two going into the fall. We're going to let Taylor [Kelly] and Mike [Bercovici] battle it out going into fall camp."
On the assessment of the team following spring practice:
"[I learned] we have a chance to be really good. We have a lot of talent out there. We missed a lot of guys because of injuries on both sides of the football. If we just keep improving and we keep doing the things that we're supposed to over the summer, if we have a good fall camp, there is no reason we shouldn't have a good year. It is a group that has been through a lot together. It's their time. Getting this program turned around and in the right direction is their number one goal."
On the speed of the offense and defense:
"Finally we're to the level that I wanted speed-wise on both sides of the football. That's what we've been shooting for recruiting wise. That's where we're at and we'll see what happens this season."
Junior quarterback Brock Osweiler
On using momentum from success:
"I think it's big. Anytime you can leave spring ball on a high note, that can carry you all the way through summer and into fall camp. The Arizona game, I carried that through winter workout sessions and into spring ball. Now we have something to build upon, keep getting better and we'll be alright next year."
On offensive improvements:
"I think every single day through out spring, whether it was small things, we constantly got better. As long as you're going out there and correcting your mistakes and getting better every day, I'll take it as a win."
On the spring success of the offense:
"I could list off about 10 playmakers and an offensive line and that's why [ASU played well]. I have more faith and trust in this football team than any other football team I've ever played for. It really makes my job easy when the offensive line plays the way they do and our receivers and backs make the plays they do. Our biggest thing is, don't turn the ball over and play fast. If we do those two things, like we did today, you see what happens."
On the depth of ASU's offense:
"Defenses are going to have a lot of trouble this year. They can try to stop one guy or maybe two guys, but we have three or four more to throw at them. I couldn't be more happy with how the offense came out and performed today. It's a group that has worked their butt off the entire offseason and into spring ball. I'm so proud of those guys and I'm looking forward to the season."
Senior wide receiver Gerell Robinson
On his motivation heading into senior season:
"The last three years I've been here we haven't been to a bowl game, so I'm trying to justify everything I've been doing here the last three years."
On how the offense played in the spring game:
"It was a very good day for us. I definitely feel like if we consistently play like that, we'll be the best team in the nation."
On the offensive scheme heading into the second season:
"I definitely feel like the biggest improvement will come from year one to year two and I think it's starting to show and everyone is beginning to take notice."
On having a break during the summer:
"There's no down time and we're just going to have push harder in the summer. We came out and accomplished what we needed to in the spring and we feel like we know where we need to be. During the summer we're going to turn it up even more and get where we want to be."
On goals for upcoming season:
"I just want to win, to be honest with you. The stats will come and everything else will take care of itself as long as we win."
On the team's off-season injuries:
"It's a minor setback, but some guys have to step up and make plays when we need them to."
Junior running back Cameron Marshall
On the game:
"It was really good for the offense. I think we scored four or five times and we just did a great job of executing."
On quarterback Brock Osweiler:
"I'm really proud of Brock. He always does a great job and always amazes me. He goes above and beyond what he's supposed to do. I just think we're going to be great and he's going to lead this team to where we need to be."
On what the team needs to improve on in the offseason:
"Consistency. We had a great day today, but we need to work on being on in every aspect of the game, from passing to running to special teams."
