OSAD Announces Student-Athletes of the Month for March

April 12, 2011

TEMPE - The recipients of Student-Athlete of the Month honors have been announced by the Office of Student-Athlete Development for March with two men and two women earning recognition. The academic coaches within OSAD selected these four individuals based upon their achievements in academics and their community all while training and competing for their respective Sun Devil teams.

The four honorees from the month of March include Carrick Felix (men's basketball), Jordyn Green (women's swimming & diving), Aderious Simmons (football) and Ashley Wimmer (women's track & field). Here is more information on why each of these fine individuals were selected as the Student-Athletes of the Month for March:

Carrick Felix - Men's Basketball
Carrick came to ASU this year after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho. After transitioning during the fall semester, Carrick enters the last five weeks of the Spring semester in great shape to have his highest GPA yet. His grades are the best they have ever been and his academic effort has increased tremendously just from the fall semester alone. Carrick comes to study hall every day and works with tutors as well. He is on track to have above a 3.0 GPA.

Jordyn Green - Women's Swimming & Diving
Jordyn is a junior from Reno, Nev. During her freshman year, after working year-round attending summer school, winter session and taking 18 hours per semester, Jordyn obtained her goal only taking three years to complete her degree. She will graduate this Spring with a 3.93 GPA in Family and Human Development. In addition, Jordyn is very competitive in the pool qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the last three years and making the podium at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships finishing third in the 200m breaststroke. Just recently, Jordyn was admitted to the Family and Human Masters program and will begin her course work this Fall during her last year of competition for the Sun Devils.

Aderious Simmons - Football
Aderious is a wonderful young man that was very close to achieving "Scholar Baller" status in the fall and is determined to do that this spring, in spite of a heavy course load. He understands that his professors are the key to his success and meets with them regularly. He is first to volunteer for community service, attends SAAC to help plan volunteer and student-athlete activities, and always takes time to speak with young people in the community about the importance of an education. He also supports his fellow Sun Devil student-athletes during their competitions and in the classroom. Aderious exemplifies the true Sun Devil spirit!

Ashley Wimmer - Women's Track & Field
Ashley will graduate in May with a double major in Justice & Social Inquiry and Political Science. What is even more amazing than the 4.00 double major is that she has accomplished this in three years. Not one to be idle, she has volunteered with Feed My Starving Children and is involved in Students Taking Action to Reach Success (STARS) as well as Pi Sigma Alpha. Ashley has demonstrated a "phenomenal work ethic" according to her coach. Ashley has exemplified the Sun Devil Way in the classroom, on campus, in the community, and in her sport.
