WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Arizona State senior Kelcy McKenna have been named Pac-10 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for Apr. 4- Apr. 10, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
In the final weekend of competition of the regular season for Arizona State, McKenna evidenced why she earned the No. 1 spot in the Sun Devil line-up, defeating two ranked opponents including upsetting the No. 1 player in the nation. McKenna upset the top-ranked singles player in USC’s Maria Sanchez. Sanchez had previously lost only twice this season before falling to No. 19 McKenna in Tempe, Ariz., 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
McKenna followed up her stellar performance Friday with a dispatching of No. 58 McCall Jones of No. 8 UCLA. With play shortened due to a rain delay, McKenna came out firing taking the first set 6-2. Despite dropping the second set 5-7, McKenna came back in the third set to put away the Bruin, 6-2.
This is the third weekly honor for McKenna and the 11th overall for the Sun Devils. Arizona State has finished off their regular season and await action in Ojai, Calif. for the the Pac-10 Championships, beginning April 28.
