TEMPE, Ariz.- Arizona State University has signed a 19th student-athlete to a national letter of intent to study and participate in football in 2011, head coach Dennis Erickson announced Monday.
Davon Coleman (6-3, 250), a highly-recruited defensive end from Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and Cleveland Ohio, has been added to the roster, bringing the class total to 19. Coleman will arrive this summer and will have three years to play three seasons of football for the Sun Devils as he utilized his redshirt season as a true freshman at Fort Scott CC.
A versatile and athletic defender, he has the ability to play multiple defensive line positions and also linebacker and will join James Brooks, Jamarr Jarrett and Junior Onyeali to form one of the conference's best defensive ends units. He totaled 65 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and one interception as a redshirt freshman for Fort Scott in 2010.
He graduated from Cleveland's Glenville High School in 2008, where he earned Honorable Mention All-Ohio recognition after his senior season, and is the first ASU signee out of the state of Kansas since former All-Pac-10 member and current Washington Redskins starting running back Ryan Torain out of Butler Community College in 2006.
"Davon is a freak athlete who is just as fast as he was strong," says Fort Scott head coach Jeff Sims. "He can jam the tight end, rush the passer, he can cover...people don't realize what a coup this was for Arizona State [to sign Coleman]."
