TEMPE, Ariz. - Soutfielder Matt Newman has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week for March 7-13, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Newman was the catalyst in Arizona State taking two of three on its road trip at Auburn. The Phoenix, Ariz., native went 5-for-11 (.455) and slugged an amazing 1.182. He belted two home runs in the 9-5 win on Saturday, driving in four runs. He also doubled twice in the series, added another RBI on Sunday and scored four times. In addition, Newman twice laid down perfect sacrifice bunts to move runners into scoring position.
This marks the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Newman and Arizona State's 97th all-time Player of the Week selection.
