Muirfield, Scotland--Arizona State men’s golfer James Byrne reached the finals of the British Amateur after defeating England’s Chris Paisley with a 2&1 victory in match play. Byrne, a native of Banchory, Scotland, will have the opportunity to earn an exemption at both the upcoming British Open at St. Andrews and the 2011 Masters with a win tomorrow.
The Sun Devil will face South Korea’s Jin Jeong in the match-play final. Jeong, who is ranked 10th in the World Amateur Rankings, defeated his opponent 5&4 to move on to the finals.
Byrne, who will start his senior season this fall, competed in nine events for Arizona State where he shot a season-low 68 in both the ASU Thunderbird Invitational and the U.S. Intercollegiate.
