Causing a Racquet: Summer Postcards

June 14, 2010

Sun Devil Fans,

It's crazy to look back and think how quickly the school year flew by, but even crazier to realize it's already the second week of June. Now that we're officially into the summer months, I got in touch with my teammates to figure out where in the world (literally) everyone is and what they will be spending their summer doing. Here's a recap:

Micaela Hein started off her summer break with a trip to Athens, Georgia where she competed in the NCAA Individual tennis championships. She won her first round match against Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State (7-5, 6-0) before falling to Miami's Bianca Eichkorn in the second round. Micaela will be spending the rest of her summer playing local tournaments in California, as well as completing a summer internship. She will be enjoying the time she has to spend with family and friends. She is excited for summer but also excited to get back to Tempe and start her senior year as a Sun Devil.

Kelcy McKenna is currently at home in Oregon where she is spending time with her family. She is unsure of her exact plans for the summer, but is hoping to get a lot of a lot of tennis training and tournaments in over the summer months in order to best prepare for next year.

Ashlee Brown started her summer by participating in a tournament in Sumter. She made it to the last round of qualifying in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles. Following that tournament, she returned home to Darwin, Australia where she is currently playing a tournament. At the completion of this tournament, she has another tournament which she is excited to play in. She loves being home, seeing her family and friends, and is enjoying the summer a lot.

Sianna Simmons is studying abroad in Madrid and Alicante, Spain for a month before traveling to Paris with her mother for a week. She hopes to get the chance to hit on some red clay and go to Wimbledon. When she returns to the United States, she intends on getting back to the grind and play some 10k tournaments in her home state of Georgia.

Michelle Brycki is back home in Sydney, Australia where she will be spending most of her summer playing tennis and as well as visiting with friends and family. Nicole Smith will be splitting her time between her home of Calgary, Canada and Phoenix, Arizona. She is continuing to rehab her injured knee and will do so throughout the summer. In addition, she is learning to play guitar which she is very excited about.

Hannah James returned to England where she has some club matches lined up for the summer. She is also signed up to compete in two ITF tournaments (on 10k and one 25k). She is looking forward to playing a five day tournament in which she will be playing against five countries and play five matches a day. This will give her 15 matches in one week and help prepare her for our fall season! She is looking forward to spending time with family and friends, training and working out, and having some free time just to hang out.

While we are off in our different directions for the summer, the ASU baseball team made the College World Series last night! We all want to send our best wishes to them and let them know we are supporting them!

I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer. Be sure to check back here for updates from some of the other girls about their adventures throughout the summer!

GO DEVILS! Deirdre
