Baseball player Riccio Torrez has been named ASU's Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 8th. Torrez is continuing his stellar sophomore campaign by raising his average to .378, while hitting 7 home runs and driving in 40 runs. Torrez continues to be a force in the middle of the line-up as the Sun Devils have been tearing the cover off the ball during their seven game win streak. His strong performance, which included five extra-base hits on the week, this season has the Sun Devils at 39-5 and first place in the Pac-10 (14-4). The Sun Devils now have the rest of the week off and then will return to action on May 10, when they begin a two-game series with BYU. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
Riccio Torrez was torrid all week, helping lead Arizona State to a 5-0 record, including a sweep of then fourth-ranked UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles. Torrez went 13-24 (.542) with four doubles, a homer and eight RBI. He also drew two walks, scored eight runs and stole two bases. In addition to playing stellar defense at first base, Riccio also took home the Pac-10 Player of the Week Award.
