After a successful week, the No. 18 Arizona State women's tennis team will continue its seven game home stand as they host Brigham Young University and Louisville. The Sun Devils head into the week riding on a five-game winning streak. They are currently 9-2 (3-0 Pac-10). The Sun Devils will host Louisville on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. while the Sun Devils will take on the Cougars at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Last Week
The Sun Devils opened their seven-game home stand with a 7-0 sweep over Memphis. The Sun Devils won each of their singles matches with only two matches going into tie-breakers. The team repeated on Friday and blanked Oregon to improve to a flawless 3-0 Pac-10 record. In an exciting end to their weekend, the Sun Devils upset then-No. 13 USC beating head coach Sheila McInerney's alma mater 4-3.
Movin' On Up!
Five straight wins earns a leap up in the rankings for Sun Devils. The team jumped up from 32nd to 18th in the latest released ITA rankings. Kelcy McKenna moved up to 78th after upsetting No. 22 Danielle Lao. Two doubles teams are now ranked. The duo of Hannah James and Kelcy McKenna is now listed at 68th while Nadia Abdala and Micaela Hein are right behind them at 69th.
Match-Clincher McKenna
Junior All-American Kelcy McKenna came through in a big way against USC. After sweeping her matches against the Washington schools, McKenna kept the momentum going as she earned wins in singles against Memphis and Oregon. With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to the outcome on court three as Kelcy McKenna went into her third set against No. 22 Danielle Lao. McKenna emerged victorious to clinch the match and give the Sun Devils their first win over USC since 2002.
Crickey Brycki!
Despite being out for several weeks due to injury, Michelle Brycki has put together quite the dual season in her comeback. The sophomore is currently flawless in dual match play, sporting a 7-0 record.
Pac-10 Player of the Week
Hein has quietly moved up the lineup this season and was the team's No. 1 player last week. She was honored for her solid effort in the No. 2 slot by the Pac-10 as she was selected as Pac-10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career. In last week's competition, she went 2-1.
Next Up
The Sun Devils will host Stanford and California in their final home matches of the season. The Cardinal comes to town March 26 while the Sun Devils will compete against the Golden Bears on March 27.
