Spots Still Open at Sun Devil Gymnastics Camp

June 3, 2009

The Sun Devil Gymnastics Camp still has spots available for all three of their camps. The SDGC will have an All-Age Camp during the weeks of June 7 and June 14. The 12 and Over Camp will be held June 21. The camps will be held at the John Spini Women's Gymnastics Training Center and campers will be staying overnight at the ASU campus.

Bringing his 30 years of coaching experience to the table, Bob Peterson will be serving as camp director. Peterson is a former Arizona State assistant gymnastics coach who has transition from coaching into operations at ASU. The ASU gymnastics team had a camp in the past, but when the team moved off-campus for five years the camp was stopped. When Peterson was hired as an assistant coach, it was one thing he wanted to bring back.

"I used to bring my club team to the Sun Devil Gymnastics Camp and I wanted to bring it back so local gymnasts can experience what they did," said Peterson. "It is a great camp for gymnasts because it brings a camp in a high level facility to local kids."

One of the goals of the camp was to raise the level of gymnastics in the state of Arizona. Peterson feels like it has done this. The camp itself has grown immensely as this year the SDGC is offering an additional week of camp. Along with Arizona gymnasts, gymnasts from around the country come to Tempe to attend the Sun Devil Gymnastics Camp.

Campers will be coached by Peterson, head ASU coach John Spini, assistant coach Jean-Luc Cairon, members of the Sun Devil gymnastics team along with other prominent gymnastics coaches throughout the Valley.
