TEMPE, Ariz. - Six Arizona State University baseball players were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft.
RHP Mike Leake became the 25th all-time ASU player taken in the first round when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the eighth overall pick. He is the 12th Sun Devil to be a Top 10 pick, and the first since Ryan Mills went sixth overall in 1998. It also marked the second straight year that ASU has had a first-round pick, as both Brett Wallace and Ike Davis went in the opening round of the 2008 draft.
OF Jason Kipnis went in the second round (63rd overall) to the Cleveland Indians, while LHP Josh Spence was taken in the third round (110th overall by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
C Carlos Ramirez was an eighth-round selection of the Angels, IF Jared McDonald went in the 21st round to the Chicago White Sox and IF Raoul Torrez was picked by the Angels in the 32nd round.
ASU leads all schools with 373 players taken since the draft's inception in 1965.
