Los Angeles, Calif. - Under sunny California skies the Arizona State Women's Tennis team shined in round one of the NCAA Women's Championships at LA Tennis Center.
Doubles action saw 49th ranked sisters Laila and Nadia Abdala overpower Anna Maskaljun and Alisa Razina 8-3 on court two, while on court one 21st ranked duo Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein defeated Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams 8-2. UNLV's Nikol Dimitrova and Rumyana Terzieva led Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons 6-4 on court three.
In singles action, Micaela Hein defeated Katy Williams 6-0, 6-4 in the number three spot. On court two No. 46 Nadia Abdala followed up with a decisive win over Nikol Dimitrova 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Michelle Brycki clinched the match for the Devils, taking down the Rebels' Anna Maskaljun 6-4, 6-3 on court five. Three matches were suspended: Kristina Nedeltcheva led No. 10 Kelcy McKenna 6-4, 5-3 Susp. on court one, Senior standout Laila Abdala led Adrienn Hidvegi 6-3, 3-3 Susp. in the number four spot, and Sianna Simmons led Rumyana Terzieva 6-3, 1-3 Susp. on court six.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played," Head Coach Sheila McInerney said. "We did very well at number one and two doubles and it was really well played. UNLV has a good team and some of the games that were still going on were close. Overall, I think the win will help us for tomorrow."
The Women's Tennis team advances to the second round of NCAA Championship action tomorrow at noon, when they will compete against the winner of No. 11 UCLA and No. 62 Boston University.
