ASU Baseball Hands Out Team Awards at 25th Annual Banquet

TEMPE, Ariz. -

The Arizona State University Baseball program handed out their team awards at the 25th Annual Baseball Banquet at the Fiesta Inn Resort on Tuesday night. Mike Leake was named the On Deck Circle Most Valuable Player.

The Sun Devils, who are the #5 National Seed entering this weekend's NCAA Tournament, finished the regular season 44-12 and won the Pac-10 Conference for the third straight season.

The 2009 winners were:

Casey Myers Academic Award..............Riccio Torrez and Andy Workman
Phill Lowery Comeback Player............. Kole Calhoun and Jordan Swagerty

Alvin Davis Leadership Award.............. Raoul Torrez

Developmental MVP............................ Jeeter Ishida and Austin Barnes

Newcomer of the Year......................... Josh Spence and Carlos Ramirez

Outstanding Offensive Player.............. Jason Kipnis

Outstanding Defensive Player.............Carlos Ramirez and Zack MacPhee

Pitcher of the Year.............................. Mike Leake

The Tillman........................................ Mike Leake

Jim Brock - Mr. Sun Devil Award........... Matt Newman

Bobby Winkles Award......................... Drew Maggi

On Deck Circle MVP............................. Mike Leake

 

Leake joins a star-studded list of On Deck Circle MVPs, including last season's winner Ike Davis. Former winners include Major Leaguers Dustin Pedroia, Willie Bloomquist, Paul Lo Duca and Barry Bonds.

 

The Sun Devils open the 2009 NCAA Tournament in the Tempe Regional on Friday, when they face Kent State at 7 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
