HOW GOOD WAS IT?: ASU's 36-under 828 at the 2009 NCAA West Regional was the best three-round tournament away from home vs. par in the past 16 years. ASU has had three 54-hole tournaments better than 36-under par, but each of them was held at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.

Led by individual medalist Jesper Kennegard, the men's golf team carded a final-round 14-under par 274 en route to capturing the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championships that concluded Saturday at the par-72, 6,849-yard Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.
The Sun Devils finished the 54-hole tournament at 36-under par 828 to register a nine-shot victory over Oregon, which totaled a 27-under par score of 837. Texas A&M posted a tournament-best score of 15-under par 273 to finish third with a 24-under par total of 840.
San Diego (849) and USC (853) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, to earn the region's final two spots into the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
"We just hit a week where everything fell into place for us," Arizona State head coach Randy Lein said, who has now guided ASU to the NCAA Championships in 16 of his 17 years at the helm of the program, tied for the second-best mark in that time (1993-2009). "Our ball striking was good, we made some putts and shot some good scores. We got some happy Sun Devils."
Arizona State was paced by Kennegard, who finished first with a 12-under par 204, one shot ahead of Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon (205) and three shots ahead of teammates Knut Borsheim and Chan Kim. Both players turned in scores of 9-under par 207.
Kennegard shot sub-par rounds all three days, while Kim play the last two rounds bogey-free and 8-under.
"I played pretty solid during the week. I started off pretty bad this morning at the par-3 three," Kennegard said. "The wind changed on me and I came up short and made double-bogey but after that I was into it and played solid."
Back in 2002, Lein saw ASU's 18-year NCAA championship consecutive streak snapped in a season that had injuries and some bad luck. ASU is back in the saddle with seven straight appearances, and to show you how competitive the NCAA men's golf champioships is, that streak already is tied for the fourth-best active streak with UCLA.
