Both Arizona State men's golf team are tied for first place at the 36th annual 15-school ASU Thunderbird Invitational held at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par-71/7,057 yards).
Both ASU teams shot 5-under 279. Colorado State is in third with a 4-under 280.
The University of Denver shot a 1-over 285 and is in fourth. Texas A&M shot a 3-over 287 and is in fifth.
Sophomore Braxton Marquez is tied for first with a 5-under 66 in just his third appearance on the year. Kyle Nielsen of New Mexico also carded a 66.
Freshman Cameron Edens is tied for third with a 3-under 68. He entered the tournament with a 75.42 stroke average in four previous appearances.
Freshman James Byrne carded a 2-under 69 and is tied for eighth. It marked his third round in the 60s this year in his fifth appearance. Freshman Stephan Gross finished at even-par 71.
Sophomore Jesper Kennegard, who entered the tournament with a 71.86 stroke average, shot a 4-over 75. Kennegard's stroke average (71.86) is the second-best by a freshman in ASU history, behind Alejandro Canizares in 2003 (71.65), when he won the national title.
ASU has won five of the past nine Thunderbird Invitationals (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004) and 13 times overall since the tournament began in 1973. Eight Sun Devils have won the tournament on nine occasions, with Alejandro Canizares the most recent with a 16-under 200 in 2004.
For the Sun Devil Gold team, Scott Pinckney and Erik Coover each shot even-par 71.
Tee times are 7:30 on Saturday and 7 a.m. on Sunday.
