student-athletes Amy Hastings and Niklas Lemke were named Pacific-10 Conference medal winners, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday.
A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance in scholarship, academics and leadership.
Hastings, a member of ASU's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams, earned All-America honors after placing fourth in the 10,000m run at the 2007 NCAA Championships and was a key member of ASU's National Champion Indoor and Outdoor Women's Track and Field teams. At the outdoor championships, also attained a special distinction in Sun Devil track and field history as she attained her 10th career All-America accolade, tying her with NCAA Champion and U.S. Olympian Maicel Malone for the most in the history of the program. The , native also contributed integral scoring efforts in the Sun Devils' surge for the indoor track and field national championship earlier in the season. Earlier in her career, Hastings became the first Sun Devil, male or female, to win a Pac-10 Cross Country Championship with her win in 2004 and is just the second woman to earn Pac-10 Athlete of the Year honors
Lemke, one of the top men's golfers in Sun Devil history, earned PING Division I Men's All-America honors by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Lemke earned 2007 Pac-10 co-Player of the Year and finished the year with a 70.03 stroke average, third-best in school history behind Paul Casey in 1999-2000 (69.87) and Phil Mickelson in 1991-92 (69.95). He posted eight top-five finishes on the year and 14 top-10 finishes in his 48-tournament career (72.10 stroke average). He earned third-team All-America honors last year and honorable mention in 2005.
