Softball Takes Game One of Tempe Super Regionals 6-1

May 26, 2006

- With Katie Burkhart throwing nine strikeouts and Kaitlin Cochran and Bianca Cruz both putting long balls over the wall, the #7 Sun Devil Softball squad took game one of the Tempe Softball Super Regional 6-1 over Florida State Friday afternoon at ASU's Farrington Stadium. The Seminoles now fall to 44-29 on the season with ASU improving to 51-13 and one win from advancing to the Women's College World Series.

Burkhart came out strong in the first grabbing two strikeouts and a ground out to take down the Seminoles in order to put the bat in ASU's hands where lead-off hitter Jessica Mapes gained first on an error and was hit home off a home run to left field by Kaitlin Cochran as ASU took a 2-0 lead after one.

ASU's bats struck again in the third as a bunt single from Kaitlin Cochran, followed with walks to Rhiannon Baca and Mindy Cowles were blasted home by a grand slam from Bianca Cruz over the left field wall to push the Devils up 6-0.

FSU came back in the fourth with a solo home run from second baseman, Veronica Wootson who put one over left field to bring the score to 6-1. Burkhart settled in to pitch two more scoreless innings before Desiree Serrano came in to wrap up the win for the Sun Devils.

The Tempe Super Regionals continue tomorrow as game two of Arizona State vs. is set to kick-off at 5 p.m. with game three (if necessary) to be played at 8 p.m. at ASU's Farrington Stadium. The game will also be aired on CSTV.
