- The #8 Sun Devil Softball team was clicking on all cylinders as they grabbed their 40th win on the season Friday afternoon with a 2-0 shut out of the #6 Cal Bears (37-7, 5-4 Pac-10). The Sun Devils are now 40-6 overall with a 4-3 Pac-10 record.
The game was a tight defensive battle between both squads, with solid pitching from both ASU's Katie Burkhart (19-3) and 's Kristina Thorson (26-5). Burkhart struck out seven on her way to picking up her 19th win on the season and was backed by a solid Sun Devil defense who kept scoreless and leaving seven on the bags.
The Sun Devils took control of the score in the fourth inning as they rallied off three hits with a double from Kaitlin Cochran and a single from Rhiannon Baca being plated with a single shot up the middle from Ashley Werschky as ASU grabbed a 2-0 lead. Though the Bears had runners in scoring position in three different innings, they were unable to cross the plate as the Devils held to only five hits.
The Sun Devils will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the #5 Stanford Cardinal in at 1 p.m.
