April 20, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - During the spring, the members of the Arizona State University soccer team are not only busy with training sessions, scrimmages and school work; they also are out taking part in various activities. In the month of April, the Sun Devils took part in three 'races'.

On April 7, members of the team took part in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The event, which raised over $200,000, saw several Sun Devils participate in shifts as teams walked continuosuly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the fundraising effort. Arizona State's student-athletes walked for Team Haley, in honor of Haley Knutsen. (View Picture)

Two days later, on April 9, the team showed up along Tempe Town Lake to support another event of endurance. This time, they were on hand to cheer for team manager Alison Burpee as she competed in the Arizona Ironman Triathlon event. The intense event consisted of a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike ride before concluding with a 26.2 mile run. Burpee successfully completed the event in 12 hours, 15 minutes and 21 seconds. One week after the triathlon, the team returned to the Tempe Town Lake area as they took on duties at one of many water stations set up along the 4.2 mile course for the second annual Pat's Run. The run, which is held in honor of Pat Tillman, the former Sun Devil football player and Army Ranger that was killed in action, saw 10,000 people take part in the event, including 8,000 runners.
