#10 Softball Shuts Out Utah to Win Consolation Championship at Judi Garman Classic

March 19, 2006

- The #10 ASU Softball squad wrapped up the 2006 Judi Garman Classic Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Utah Utes in the championship game of the consolation bracket 1-0, as the Devils walk away from the weekend with a 4-2 record and an overall record of 32-3 on the season.

Powered by Katie Burkhart's complete control of the Utes in the batters box, the Devils drove in a run on four hits while Burkhart allowed only two hits while striking out 11 of the 24 batters she faced on her way to picking up win number 13 on the season and ending her current tally of K's on the season at 157.

The Devil offense was barely able to get a run out of the Utes as shut the Devils down through three innings before Ashley Werschky's lead-off single got the ball rolling for the Devils in the fourth. With Delenah Langley pinch-running for Werschky, the Devils stepped up to plate a run as Kim Zadrozny came up to lay down a perfect sacrifice to advance Langley to third after she stole second, Bridgette Caron came up with a ground out to third to drive in Langley for the only run of the game.

It proved to be all the Devils would need as they shut down the Utes the rest of the game, who in the previous game came through in extra innings to beat the defending national-champions, the #9 Michigan Wolverines to advance to the consolation championship game.

The Devils will return home to and gear up for Friday's double-header match-up against UNLV, with the first game to kick off at 11 a.m. at Farrington Stadium. ASU and the Runnin' Rebels last met earlier this month at the UNLV Invitational in which saw the Devils take away a 4-2 win over the Rebels.
